Custom Request!

Ok

I've seen Mercs and BMWs with this feature: When the vehicle is parked and off.. the owner leaves the turn signal stalk activated for one side or the other.

When the stalk is engaged (either side), the parking bulbs on that side stay illuminated. Great idea if you park in fog or on a blind turn and want drivers to see your ride from further away.

Work your magic Lipschitz! Can it be done?

Re: Customer Requests???

I can think of some pretty simple ways to do that with a "master enable" switch. Meaning, you'd flip your turn signal stalk AND push another switch to "enable" the turn signals being on with the car parked. Making it automatic without a switch, on the other hand, may be a little more tricky.

Re: Customer Requests???

I'm all ears.. I live on a twisty road that sees a lot of fog at night and this feature is just plain practical in my mind. A small master switch could be feasible..

I'd have to do some research but I wonder what's preventing the battery from dying in the european cars that I saw.. if there is any prevention mechanism at all.

That's the beauty of a multi-plexed wiring system that the BMW's and Mercs (and our Jeeps, too!) have. Fliiping a switch or flicking on a blinker merely tells a computer what you are requesting - the request may or may not be honored. As pilots like to muse about the "fly-by-wire" control systems on the new high-end jets, "you aren't in control of the aircraft, you're merely a voting member aboard it."

So you flick on your turn signal, telling the jeep what you want it to do. But the computer isn't listening to you exclusively - it is gathering other bits of information, too. One of these bits of information is battery voltage. If it senses that battery voltage is too low, it overrides your request and shuts off all of its outputs, regardless of the position of the blinker handle.

Ever notice that you can't get a dead battery in your Jeep from leaving the dome light on? That's for this very reason. You told the jeep you wanted the dome light on but when battery voltage dropped to dangerous levels, it overrode your decision. Pretty neat, huh?

Re: Customer Requests???

I have heard of it before but I didn't know how it works. The only time I killed my battery in my Jeep is from leaving the key in it. I've left lights on all night and haven't noticed until the morning when I turn the key and the reading lamp was on. It's a great deterrent from a dead battery.

If you're looking for research I've already googled "side-selectable" and "european parking lights" resulting in a bunch of talk on some forums but no real data on how it works...

Re: Customer Requests???

The German made cars also use different style bulbs as well for this feature..something to consider.

Re: Customer Requests???

What type of bulbs do they use? I think they're halogen for the front parking lights but the tail lights that I've seen are LED.. the BMW I saw had the halo lights on around the low/high beams on one side, too.

Re: Customer Requests???

My apology on the terminology. I was trying to say that German-made autos do not use our (American) parking/running light operation. So the bulbs/lights used for the "parking awareness" is generally not the same one used for the blinker.

Re: Customer Requests???

I'm trying to think of a place for the switch.. something that ergonomically provides a one-two operation for when I want to use this feature.

Check the area right above the cubby hole and the adjustable pedals (you do have them, right?) to the left of the column. If I had to add any add'l switches, that's where I'd mount them. That's close to the turn signal stalk, too.

In regards to the bulbs, I would foremost recommend LED bulbs for this feature. LED's have exponentially less current draw, which would minimize the dead battery situation. I know I can make this happen right now, but I'm trying to come up with a way to make it cleaner.

Lastly, I just saw your sig and, SERIOUSLY? 19.6 MPG?!?!? That's incredible. I get 15.0 - 15.3, and that's all premium because I have a custom tune for my programmer. Get's expensive. Of course, I do drive it like the 24-year old that I am, lol.
