05 5.7 545rfe transmission solenoid issue.

I bought my wk two years ago. Every once in awhile it would shift into 2nd gear and I would have to put it in neutral and then back into drive to get it to shift again. Mechanic at jeep dealership said they have common transmission solenoid pack failures and to replace it. Ordered a new one and went to install it yesterday.

The new one pack i have has a white plug, made for 2004+ vehicles. The solenoid pack I removed has a black plug made for 99-03 vehicles. My car being an 05 I don't know why it had a black one. Could it be possible someone replaced it with the wrong one causing the 2nd gear problems? Should I return the white plug for a black plug version?

The white plug solenoid is a replacement for the black plug. Strange that yours has the black plug, but most probably they had some old stock which had to be used. Both function the same, but the white plug solenoid is an improved version with different solenoids and also the patern of the fluid canals is different, eventhough the end connections are the same. You will not find a new black plug solenoid anymore and also better install the improved white plug version.
You most probably will change the filters as well now that its open. Dont forget to install the seal from the oval inlet filter first in the pump opening with the help of a butt end of a hammer or alike, and then install the filterneck into the seal. Trying to install the seal while its on the filterneck, will most probably result in a disconnected filter and a non functioning transmission.

Do you know if I can just swap the two, no adapters or anything?

Yes, you can just swap them. The new solenoid came with a new seal plate i hope, because they are different as well. But you normally have to replace the seal plate, because the thin rubber seal most of the time breaks as soon as you remove the solenoid from the valve body.

It came with a new seal/gasket.

Is there a trick for the circular filter to screw on. I got a new one but when I try to screw it on it crossthreads and pops off.

Did the spin-on filter come off with the plastic threaded part, or did that part stay in the transmission? Maybe that threaded part has an other type of thread then the new filter.
