05 WK Limited Auto Headlight Problem!

Just got a car couple days ago and am having problem with the auto headlight. If I turn the control to "A" for auto headlight, the light does not come on no matter I long I wait. I did some research and tests and I hope you guys can help me locate the problem.

-windshield is the original one.
-auto dim mirrors work
-headlights work fine with manual control

Test:
I had the auto rain sensor option on, I sprayed water on the windshield and the light came up. Without water, no light on “automatic"

I use auto lighting a lot with my previous cars and hate to have this one fail. I would really appreciate if you guys can help me out here! Thank you!

So let me get this straight.

You turn the lights to the auto selection and they don't turn on when it gets dark? They do however work with the rain sense and wipers. Correct?

If yes I would check the sensor located on top of your dash in the middle as that sensor tells the PCM whether it's dark or not outside.

The sensors in the box behind the rear view mirror look for headlights and taillights and auto dim the brights when they are set to in the EVIC and also set to auto. The other sensor also sets the rain-sense option.

Check the EVIC menu also and make sure everything is set as you wish.

Thank you and you are absolutely right on your description of the problem. I might purchase a new sensor to give it a shot! Thank you!

Another question. So, given the current situation, if I manually turned the highlights on, will the smartbeam system work? Or it has to work under "automatic headlight"?

Smart beams should be fine, they are controlled from the box behind the mirror. Make sure the option is set in the EVIC.

Test the sensor in the middle of the dash by placing a coffee cup over it to block out the sunlight

The sensor is definitely not working from the test. Here is another problem, I was going through the part catalog and found there is one Sunlight Sensor and one Headlamp sensor. I have no idea which is which but I ordered a headlamp sensor which is the available one out of the two on Mopar.
Any idea on the difference of the two sensors?

Depending upon the type of temperature control you have the correct part has to be used. The sun sensor helps the manual temperature control equipped vehicles auto regulate dual zone temperatures and seconds as your day/night sensor for your headlamp.

So since you state you have a limited they come equipped with dual zone control (http://www.wkjeeps.com/2005_standard.htm) so the part you would need is #55116838AB SENSOR A.T.C. SUN

Hope this clears it up for you!

This is extremely helpful! Thank you very much! I went to the Jeep dealer at Santa Monica at around 6. With their "electric" guy gone, they had a hard time telling me which is which. And they did not have the Sunlight nor the auto headlamp sensor with them.

I will order one online I guess. Mopar eStore does not have the A.T.C Sun sensor now. If you know any good place to get Jeep parts, please let me know! Thank you!

You are very welcome I checked rockauto.com couldn't find it. Try calling other jeep stealerships or just see how long the back order is online

Another quick question, might be a stupid one too. If I plug in the headlamp sensor, is it going to do anything bad to the car?

I am thinking maybe it might solve my auto headlamp problem and i really don't care about the AC. As long as it blows cold and hot air as I desire, I am fine. Thank you again!

Re: 05 WK Limited Auto Headlight Problem!

I am unsure as to whether the 2 connections are the same... But even if they are you may get DTC's for a faulty sun sensor since technically it wont be there.

Quoted from the repair manual:
"The A/C Heater control continually monitors the sun sensor and will store trouble codes for any problem it detects"
