06 JGC-L hard shifting and irregular idling

I have a 2006 4.7L V8 that has started to shift very hard when slowing down. The RPM's have also started to jump around when in park, actually causing it to shut off. The check engine light came on a couple of weeks ago and I figured it was the transmission. Had the code read and was told it was actually an Engine code...something about a vacuum leak. A week later, took my jeep in to a mechanic and they cleaned the throttle body...said there was a lot of buildup do to the mileage (103,000). Drove great for a week or so but it just started idling funny again and has down shifted very hard twice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 06 JGC-L hard shifting and irregular idling

its likely your throttle position sensor.... search for "tps" or "idle" and you will come across any one of a dozen 4.7l irregular idle issues where I have explained how to check your TPS.

Edit (reading the whole post ftw ) Without knowing the code there are many things it could be. None the less the TPS is a common problem on the 4.7 that will cause an irregular idle condition and I could see if it is going south a faulty input for throttle position could do cause some funky shifting concerns.

Re: 06 JGC-L hard shifting and irregular idling

Again, if you did a search... I just need to make a word document I can copy paste every time... every time I try not to retype how to check it and I end up doing it, over and over. Anyway, if you grab your tps sensor while still connected, bolted in, vehicle running and try to wiggle it, your idle will flair and freak out if it is failing. If its in good shape it will not cause any fluctuation. Even then if it does cause an idle flair, this may not be your entire concern.
