$144 at dealer for Differential seal, sweet!!

I noticed last week puddles of oil under my rear differential, where it appeared to be coming out from the front of the case at the shaft. I instantly researched on doing it myself, finding out diagrams and cost of the seal itself. Then realized I needed a torque wrench that goes up to at least 250ft lbs. Those are expensive, even used on ebay. I gave in and called the local Jeep dealer near me, was quoted an hour labor, plus $40 for the seal, and $10 for a quart of oil. I dropped it off, walked 5 miles home and got a call an hour later saying it was done and all set. I was sure this would be a $300 job or more at the dealer, so im surprised it was only $144.

Don't you also need a sensitive in-lb torque wrench to set (check) the pinion nut torque, or do these not use crush sleeves anymore?

Re: $144 at dealer for Differential seal, sweet!!

I got my Chraftsman torque bar at Sears with the life time guarantee for $75 and it hit $250.

For the Rear diff seal you only need about 8lbs of torque per nut but the Pinion seal (if i am understanding you correctly) is what you had replaced you fo need to torque the nut to 250lbs. My pinion seal is on its way out too but i will change it myself.

You do not need a specific torque bar in "in" lbs to set the pinion nut once the gears have been setup. that is only if you set it up for the first time.

If you just remove the nut, remove the yoke, change the seal, re install the yoke and reinstall the nut (your supposed to replace the nut every time its removed ($5.00) because its oblonged at the end so it does not come loose. )
