2005 wk 2wd covert to at least2wd with esd or traction control ?

I have an 05 wk 2wd...i am wondering what its going to take to convert the rear end to one with esd or if thats even possible...ive read up a bit on guys doing the full conversion to 4x4 but im just looking for some advice on electronic slip differential or traction control...whatever you want to call it.any advice would be helpful.

Why would you even bother? I have a 2wd '05 wk and it hasn't been bad through all the Michigan snow. I'd just sell it and buy a 4wd if that's what you want. Much easier, and probably save money in the long run.

I purchased the truck in Las Vegas...didnt need 4x4. Now i live in Denver. made it through the winter but it was a bitch...i would rathur salvage the parts from a wrecker and do it myself...im sure its fairly inexpensive and easy to do...

If you can get a hold of a salvage 4x4, go ahead and do the full 4x4 swap.

Re: 2005 wk 2wd covert to at least2wd with esd or traction control ?

Alright gents,

heres what it is... been doing some research and am interested in buying a limited slip
locker for my rig.looked at my build sheet and this is what i have:

Differential Type 1: Conventional (C213R)

Availability: Standard with 3.7 and 4.7-liter engines
Ring Gear Diameter: 8.3 in. (213mm) Axle Ratios: 3.07:1 (3.7-liter); 3.73:1 (4.7-liter/5.7-liter)

apperantly they offered an option of factory limited slip being this:

Differential Type 2: Vari-Lock Progressive

Availability: Optional on 4 x 2 models
Ring Gear Diameter: 8.3 in. (213mm) Axle Ratios: 3.07:1 (3.7-liter); 3.73:1 (4.7-liter/5.7-liter)

what needs to happen to convert to oem? Or should i go with an auto locking limited slip diff like one of these:

http://www.eaton.com/EatonCom/Produc.../FAQ/index.htm

http://www.aussielocker.com/index.ph...d-58229-2.html

Theres just so many variables which is making it too hard to decide. I live in colorado now and my baby sucks in the snow. Its my daily driver so i dont think i want a positraction set up, leaning more towards limited slip. The other thing im worried about is the talk about the ratcheting noise (chattering) while making sharp turns due to the clutch in them. Ive read all kinds of opinions on lsd and posi on snow and ice...in colorado you learn how to drive on it so of course 4x4 is better but thats not an option for me. im really looking for what is needed to convert to oem vari-lok progressive or something similar in an aftermarket application.Any input would help me get pointed in the right direction. Any reviews from anyone here who has modded their diffs?

word!

sell it and buy a 4x4. it wont cost much more if your vehicle is in good shape and you will still get the same mpgs

I'd just sell your current one and buy the spec you want.

At the end of the day, what's your time and frustration worth, and if you mod it to be 4wd you still have a bastard child.

Re: 2005 wk 2wd covert to at least2wd with esd or traction control ?

a bastard child? Ive invested too much time and money to just trade her off...i can get the entire oem Vari-Lock Progressive setup for 1200 new. how do you figure selling my baby and getting a new one would be cheaper? and heres bastard child fr ya...chew on this for a min...a standard 4x4 open differential wont have shit on my locked 2wd limited slip because they have the same problem i have but theirs is just in the front as well as the rear. geez dont people think before they type? or read for that matter...
trust me, if i had my first choice i would have gotten a str or hemi with qd11 like yours.

Re: 2005 wk 2wd covert to at least2wd with esd or traction control ?

bastard child because a modified 2wd is not worth anything for resale. so the money would be better spend on buying a 4x4. trade it for a 4wd wk and transfer your mods over. putting money into a 2wd jeep is a lost cause unless you are going to drive it until it dies.

First, even an "open differential" sends power to both tires, until you turn or until one loses traction. A 4x4 with two open diffs will have 4 wheels driving unless you are driving around like a d*ickhead in the snow. And in that case, the traction control system will apply brakes to the tire losing traction...sending power to the other side and mimicking the effect of a limited slip. Second why are you trying to insult people that are offering their opinion when you ASKED for it?

i was asking about lsd not 4x4...therefore his comment of calling my vehicle a bastard child is uncalled for.seccond...did you watch the video i posted? I have an open diff and when rear pass tire spins its game over...i want a locking diff or lsd.if you have made this mod i would love to hear feedback.i didnt feel as if i insulted the man...sorry if i offended you.

Re: 2005 wk 2wd covert to at least2wd with esd or traction control ?

Ok, I misread your original post. My bad. TBH my eyes kinda glazed over when your confused Traction Control with an ELSD.

Moving on, now that I see you don't want a 4WD conversion, yes, I think it entirely plausable to install a complete rear diff assembly from a QDII equiped Jeep.

I think you could quite easily do it. Obviously it will bolt in, and I would operate the ELSD by a simply relay and switch, leaving you to engage it when you want, rather than going through the drama of trying to integrate the engagement into the factory box of smarts.

You'll need to investigate the amount of amperage and current draw the ELSD requires to operate correctly, as you don't want to either over-power or under-power the system and burn it out or have it not work correctly. Not too difficult to ascertain I wouldn't think.
