Twists on dipstick

I just checked the oil on my preowned 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi, the dipstick has 4-5 twists in it. It almost appears that someone tried to screw the dipstick in. I just wanted to make sure that these twists aren't normal.

Re: 2008 5.7 Hemi dip stick markings

The twists are normal for the oil dipstick.

Looks weird, but that's the way that they are.

Just to clarify: The twists are normal if they are along the length, these help to snake the dipstick down into the oil pan. The bottom part where you read the oil level should be flat.

I have the same kind of dipstick. I Does 7 quarts really fill yours up? I find that 7 quarts only comes up to the very bottom of the lower hash marks. I fill it to 7.5 cold to get it up to the "S" in SAFE, which still looks low to me. I haven't checked it when it's warm, but I can't imagine it would expand that much...

Yep. For the >92K miles that I've had it (from new), it's been exactly 7 qts., every 5K miles.

Extra 1/2 qt will not affect anything, but your grommet will probably stop puckering. I "burn" about 3/4 qt between oil changes (some of this goes into the oil catch can from the PCV valve.)

"Grommet?" "Puckering?" Huh? Are you talking about the engine seals?

I found a thread with some wk2 guys who have the same Hemi problem...

Oil Dip Stick Reading

I think I need to take some cold and hot readings and post some pics.

Grommet is what you are sitting on. Old sailor's term for your a$$. Comes from the old grommet holes sewn into the sails of a square-rigger.

It puckers and takes suction on the seat when you are scared..........
