5.7L WK Front "Clunk" Noise

I had an oil change done on my 5.7L the other month and afterwards I started to hear an occasional clunking noise coming from somewhere in the front half, when I would turn my wheels all the way to the far right or left. A family member works at a Mazda dealership so I went there for the discount and they found something wrong with the front differential mount and fixed it.

Since fixing that, shifting is a little bit smoother, but the sound has gotten louder and is a lot more common. I gave it back to the Mazda dealership today and the tech, who formerly worked at a Jeep dealership, drove it around but didn't hear it until coming back to park. They've checked the suspension/shocks so far, but aren't sure what's causing the noise yet.

Any idea's at what may be causing the clunk, and why fixing part of the differential caused it to be louder and also become more frequent?

Could be the end links or front differential bushings. Common problem on WK's.

Re: 5.7L WK Front "Clunk" Noise

I'm near certain it will be your front sway bar bushes. Mine did exactly the same thing.
To check if it is, no need to spend money, just drop the sway bushes out, grease them up, and re-install. You'll know instantly.

I doubt it's the front diff snubber.

Re: 5.7L WK Front "Clunk" Noise

this happened to me exactly a year ago. It would only make the noise during the beginning of my drive on sharp turns at low speeds.... such as reverse out of parking space and turning out of parking lot....

my Dealer could not find the problem or hear it... It eventually just went away

Re: 5.7L WK Front "Clunk" Noise

Mine had the similar symptoms (I think, don't know for sure do to trying to explain a sound via the keyboard). I pulled the swaybar mounts off, cut grooves in to the bushings, drilled holes in them, then drilled holes in the mounts and installed zerk fittings. Re-assembled and greased up.

The sound is gone.
