545RFE Transmission Service: Gasket or RTV?

I'm prepping to drop the pan on my 545RFE + change the filters. The sump filter kit from Napa came with a rubber/silicone (not cork or fiber) pan gasket. Mopar doesn't make a gasket for it, so I'm assuming that's why they say to use RTV. While I don't mind the time & mess of RTV, the gasket is nice. Any firsthand experiences or opinions either way? I was checking the JU ZJ/WJ forum and it got pretty nasty. Something about RTV & transmission fluids not co-existing well and excess pieces of TRV clogging up things.

Re: 545RFE Transmission Service: Gasket or RTV?

I've done all my drivetrain gaskets with black RTV - no issue here. I do the wiggle dance application on the outside of the plate and let it sit(air-dry) for about 30 mins, put it back on and give it about another 30 to settle, then fill.

Re: 545RFE Transmission Service: Gasket or RTV?

I've done both the rtv and/or the gasket on past 545's. If you do use the gasket dab a bit of trans fluid on it to help it seal. I used rtv on the WK trans pan and have yet to have it leak. Getting the front of the pan finagled in while not hitting the return filter and smearing your rtv will take some finnesse. The cats make it impossible to put the pan straight back on.

I used both when I did mine. Just don't over torque the bolts on the reinstall.

OK, returned the Napa filters, due to not being able to tell if one of them was up.to.par with ta valve correction. Picked up Mopar filters + RTV for $70
