A Few Various Mods

Thought I'd share what I've been up to in case any of this gives someone else an idea for their own rig. Over the past few weeks I've been doing small, inexpensive projects with the Jeep. I got a Midland 1001z CB, a 100 watt PA from Radioshack, painted my rear (and soon front) Jeep emblem, put in and wired a fog light switch, and installed two 4' fiberglass antennas using custom mounts I built for next to nothing.

When I first installed the CB and PA, the only 3mm jack I was able to find had incredibly thin wires so the PA wasn't very loud. This past weekend I tore apart the jack wire and soldered 12 gauge wire onto the jack instead. Now this thing's hellah loud!

I forget who it was who posted pics of their painted Jeep emblem but I owe them a thank you - the effect is great! Used a hairdryer (surprisingly useful tool when it comes to car work) and an old credit card to peel the 3M tape off, stuck the letters in a pan of lacquer thinner to soften up the remaining tape, used a knife to cut it off, sanded the chrome down a bit with a fine sandpaper, primed, coated, and used new 3M tape to put them back on. I love how much better the emblem stands out and the fact that it matches my color scheme now.

For the longest time I was afraid to drill into my dashboard to install a fog light switch but when I was putting the CB in the cubby i realized that the switch could fit nicely there as well. Drilled through with I think a 5/8" bit, pulled the wires up through a couple holes I had drilled through the firewall, stuck it all in place and now I've finally got my lights wired! The switch I chose lights up when turned on so I remember that I might be blinding other drivers if I leave them on.

I went with dual antennas because I like to keep things as symmetrical as possible on the Jeep. I'm going to be wiring the left antenna to the CB. Until I can find a use for the second its function will be purely aesthetic. I built 2 mounts using count plate things I picked up at Home Depot for a couple bucks. Drilled holes for the antennas, lined the plates up at 5 to compensate for the angled mounting spots, and welded and painted the plates. $20 for the antennas, couple bucks for plates, leftover spraypaint = cheap mod!

Re: A Few Various Mods

Does anyone have big JK tires (Sahara and such) and the spare with a trailer hitch?

I can barely squeeze a 255/70/18. I do not see how a Hitch can fit in there as well.

Sometimes people with an on board inflator will deflate the spare to squeeze it in the stock area. Otherwise just toss it in a roof basket (check out Rola) or leave it with someone willing to drive it to you should you ever need it.
