Red face Aftermarket Stereo Install

I have a base stock stereo in a single din space, and I've been looking at double din dvd receivers. Does the stock harness that powers and transmits the stock stereo carry enough power to power the aftermarket stereo? Also, is the harness that fits into the Jeep navigation unit the same harness that fits into the base stereo?

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

1. Technically, Yes... stock harness provides controls, power, and communication between the car, the speakers, and the stereo. The harness allows the stereo to receive power. So, yes you can power the New DVD reciever with the harness... HOWEVER, The harness will not be able to just be plugged in, it will need an Adapter (see below posts)

Check my link in bottom of my signature. This guide will answer many questions you have.

Try this.
1. go to crutchfield.com
2. outfit your car
3. Choose and see which 2 Din dvd recievers will fit.
4. It will show you what adaptor harness is necessary for a new reciever.

Its late, I will be able to assist you further tomorrow. Good luck! Audio is addicting! no...wait.... Jeeps and everything jeep is addicting.

EDIT: my below posts should help you out for the time being.

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130AVHP....html?tp=20217 That Pioneer reciever is one of my personal favorites. It is a two DIN.

This link, Adaptor for Harness, is a required interface to keep steering controls, accessory POWER, as well as other signals.

(BTW, if you buy everything you need from crutchfield, they give you most needed stuff automatically and for reduced prices... so if you put a stereo in the cart, it would show what else they advise you to buy.)

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

you will also need to order this NAV bezel upgrade to use a 2 DIN reciever
Bezel upgrade URL

You will also need this mounting kit for a 2 Din reciever

mounting kit URLl

BEFORE YOU EVEN THINK about buying a stereo,
you will need the aforementioned. adaptor, upgraded bezel, and a mounting kit.

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

Hey i was just on crutchfield and i discovered that when i put the pioneer aftermarket stereo into my cart and then choose my car type, it says that my car has no accessory power lead and it gives me an adapter that costs an additional 30 bucks. Are you sure that all I need is the harness to fit into the pioneer stereo?

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

It also says that the adapter you showed me doesn't fit my car, which has a stock single din radio. Is that just crutchfield trying to be difficult or is this true?

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

you need an Adapter for the harness to become compatible with the aftermarket stereo.

Give me your car's specs. I was assuming it was a 2005 Laredo. These typically come with the standard single din radio

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

Crutchfield kept telling me no radios would fit my car... Laredo comes with a 1.5 din so i guess that's why?

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

I have a 2007 Grand Cherokee Laredo base so yeah you pretty much have the same car stereo. But when i plugged in that i have a non-navigagtion Jeep it gave me this adapter: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1206502...Interface.html

Re: Aftermarket Stereo Install

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001U3ULQO
That's what I used when I had my Sony doubledin HU installed. I didn't do the installation myself I just bought all the stuff needed and had it installed professionally.
Also this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002BEQNE
and if you have steering wheel controls (radio brand dependent): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EAWNVY
bought an oem navigation bezel and the metra kit so everything looks fresh

end result:
