Anyway to modify rear lights to have rear fogs?

I'd like to install a switch to turn on half of my rear brake lights to give the effect of rear fog lights. While this will be used occasionally for driving in the fog, it'll be used way more for when the car behind me travels too close and I want them to think I'm braking. My last vehicle had fog lights that looked like brake lights and the followers would always back off when I turned the rear fogs on.

Ideally, the brake lights would work them same way they do now (illuminating the same lights that currently illuminate when the brake pedal is applied) if the rear fogs aren't on. If the rear fogs are turned on, half of the brake light would light up and the other half not. Then once you hit the brake pedal, the other half lights up.

Does anybody know if it's possible to do this and if so, where would I start?

Re: Anyway to modify rear lights to have rear fogs?

It is possible to do, but there are several factors to consider.

First, there is a difference between the '05-'06 built vehicles, and the '07-'10 in the tail light wire harness.

Second, I'm not sure if our WK's are "smart enough" to tell us when a bulb is out. If they are, then it will limit you to your options, as it will mean disconnecting one set of the bulbs and using a resistor to fool the computer into thinking there is a bulb there. Then your only option would be to have your idea for fog lights in "full time" operation (1 set of bulbs only for the Brake lights, and the other set for the fogs).

Third, even if our vehicles are not smart-sensing, it will mean a bit of intricate wiring to get the dual mode setup functioning.

The simplest solution would be to remove one set of the wiring to a pair of the bulbs, and then wire in a relay controlled by a dash switch to power those bulbs as the fogs. This would result only in a full-time only operation of your idea.

Re: Anyway to modify rear lights to have rear fogs?

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't physically looked at the enclosure yet to know how plausible this is, but I'm going to try and add another hole and insert another light into it. I'll update the forum if I get anything figured out. Thanks again.
