Autostix....

Lately I've been messing around with autostix, mostly downshifting to stop but sometimes messing around with it to see if it feels any faster. I really dont know how to use the thing, can I mess it up? Someone said if you hold it to the left for a second or two it will shift to the lowest gear that it can, the thing is it always seems to drop to 1st even when im going pretty quick. Is that normal? I've heard that its made so it wont let you do anything stupid enough to wreck the tranny but it felt kind of funny a few times I downshifted.

I've never driven a WK with the AutoStick before, but I did test drive a Hyundai Genesis with a Manumatic, and all you did was tap it once for every gear you want to go up or down. So say your in 5th, and you want to go down to 3rd, you would tap it twice, usually to the left, or down, whichever way its set up. I think WK's are set up for side tapping.

Its putting you in control, but I'm sure the Jeep will know not to shift into 1st when you're telling it to when its going 70 down the highway. There has to be some fail safe kinda things built into it.

When I first bough my Hemi, I didn't realize how it worked. I left for home and got on the freeway about 5 miles from where I had bought it. I noticed it had all kinds of pulling balls and had a seat in the pants feel I liked. Only then,did I realize how it operated.Seems I had it in 3rd gear then I noticed that when I bumped it to the right it shifted into OD. I hardly use that option though..

Knowing Jeep, there are no fail-safes. Use it accordingly.

Got his off WKJeeps for ya. Read it:

The transmission will not honor a downshift command if the downshift would result in a engine overspeed condition. The transmission will always honor a upshift command from 1st to 2nd gear, however 2nd - 3rd, 3rd - 4th, and 4th – 5th upshift commands will not be honored if the vehicle speed is to low to maintain operation in the commanded gear. The transmission will automatically downshift as the vehicle slows to a stop.
When in the Autostick mode, as the engine RPM nears the engine maximum speed, an “UPSHIFT” message will appear in the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) portion of your instrument cluster. This message appears in order to alert the driver that the engine speed is approaching it’s maximum value and a upshift to the next gear is required. In the event that the driver does notupshift, the engine control system will limit the engine speed to protect the engine.
Shifting into or out of the Autostick mode can be done at any time without taking your foot off the accelerator pedal. When the driver wishes to engage Autostick, simply move the shift lever to the Left or Right (D-/D+) position while in D (Drive).
Hold the shift lever to the right for at least one second to disengage Autostick. The transmission will now operate automatically; shifting between the five available gears.

Autostick General Information

  • You can start out in first or second gear. The system will ignore attempts to upshift at too low of a vehicle speed. The transmission will automatically downshift to first gear when coming to a stop.
  • Starting out in second gear is helpful in snowy or icy conditions.
  • Avoid using speed control when Autostick is engaged.
  • The transmission will not automatically shift up when maximum engine speed is reached while Autostick is engaged.
  • Transmission shifting will be more noticeable when Autostick is engaged.

yes holding it left or right for to long will make it throw to either D or 1st, theres no fail safe. just remember when you shift, it only needs a quick bump

There's a big difference between a system designed to not allow you to do anything that would "destroy" either the engine or tranny and one that will not allow you to do things that will stress the engine or tranny. If used inappropriately, the autostix can do things that will severely stress the tranny and potentially lead to an earlier rebuild. I wouldn't hesitate to use it to its fullest from time to time but if you plan to keep the Jeep for a long time, I wouldn't make it a daily habit.

I like it! I use it all the time, it's pretty quick. The engine reacts faster then just step on the pedal..

I used to use it all the time. No mas. That's why with the SRT, I will not use it on a daily basis. No freaking way.

I never use it. I bought a vehicle with an automatic transmission so I didn't have to be shifting all the time If it engaged with the same authority as a standard transmission, then maybe I'd use it more.

I use it all the time on my 5.7 when slowing down. I feel when u put it in autostick in the rain it handles a little better.
