Battery or alternator?

My jeep wouldnt start yesterday so i jumped it. drove about 25 miles and stopped to get coffee. Came out 5 minutes later and jeep wouldnt start. Jumped it again and continued on my way. had to jump it everytime i shut the jeep off.

Today i used a voltmeter and battery tested at 9.7v with jeep off.
With the jeep started, the the voltmeter tested at 16v.

is it the alternator that cooked my battery from putting out 16v? or is my battery being dead that caused my alternator to spike that high in voltage?

Trying to figure out which I need to replaced first.

thanks

Re: Battery or alternator?

If say it's the battery, if after driving for 25 miles there wasn't enough charge after 5 minutes to make it start again.

well your battery will be toast if its getting 16 volts ....google your alt model or see if you can see the info for the output on the alt , and see whats meant to be coming from it , .. but yup you need another batt for sure , if you can get a 2nd hand one till you sort your alt output ....otherwise you will just kill it .

Re: Battery or alternator?

Think mine hits 14.1 when running so thats way to high. I would be inclined to take the battery to a local shop & get it tested though. Normally places that sell them will test for dead cells etc. I would be more inclined to say battery than alternator as the volts are going up when running

I ended up getting a new battery from advance under warranty since they said the battery was dead. It was only a yr n half old. My alternator is a year old. Its a 160 amp alternator.

I still cannot figure out how the battery died so quickly

Sometimes they just go.....the factory battery in my 2012 JKR only lasted a bit over a year and a half. Started Jeep at home, went to move Jeep into the shop at work after opening it up and nothing.....wouldn't even take a jump, battery was showing like 3.9 volts on the voltmeter.....glad to hear it was just the battery and they warrantied it for you
