Broken Locking Lug Nut

I was hearing a noise from the back end of the truck and wanted to pull the wheels and check the brakes. Well, when I went to remove the locking lug nut with the key, I heard a crack and it broke into 4 pieces...I was like WTF....The key broke also....I wasnt using an Impact gun or anything..just loosening it by hand...So now I am stuck with a broken lug nut and have been trying to think of a way to get the wheel off...I was going to drill the stud out and replace it, but I broke a drill bit half way through...The only other thing I could think of was to try remove the hub assembly with the wheel still attached, and see If I could grind the head of the stud off from the back, then punch it through...Other than that, I may have to have a torch taken to it, which I'm sure will ruin the chrome finish...Anyone else have any ideas?

Re: Broken Locking Lug Nut

I would get afew hardened drill bits and finish it off that way. Otherwise you may ruin your wheel.

Re: Broken Locking Lug Nut

This guy on the Honda forums has a great solution:

Quote:
Yes - drive a 6 point socket on it (one that almost fits but is one size too
small to fit over it). If you have chosen the right size it will be peeling
the metal back as it goes on, so watch your fingers. Remove the lock as
though removing a regular lug nut. The two will be tightly jammed together
and you will need a vise and a drift or punch to drive the lock out of the
socket.

I've only done it once, but it worked the first time. Needless to say, it
can't be done with a cheap socket.

Hemi WK is just really nice
Re: Broken Locking Lug Nut

Either fork over the cash for a universal wheel lock tool or use a socket as posted above. I spent a few years working for a couple different goodyear tire shops when I was younger and have removed many wheel locks without the key.

Re: Broken Locking Lug Nut

I guess nobody read the post..The problem isnt a lost key, the lugnut itself actually split into 4 pieces....There is nothing left to bite on....I got the other three off using the above mentioned method....
