Can I recalibrate the miles to empty guage?

I parked my Jeep last night with the fuel light on and the range counter saying I had 0 miles left till empty. Started it up this morning, drove 7 miles in stop & go conditions, and then refueled. It only took 18 gallons. The tanks capacity is 20.5 gallons, which means I could have gone at least another 30 miles. Is there any way to recalibrate this to where it's a little more accurate?

it calibrates on its own, it goes by the mpg you are getting at the moment

Also, the intent is that you not run it too low. If you do, you may run the fuel pump dry and then you'll be buying a new one. Not cheap.

5.7Unlimited is just really nice
Re: Can I recalibrate the miles to empty guage?

The guage bases its estimate on how you drove your jeep for the last little while, I believe there is a picture of Joe's old overland with a full tank saying "96 miles to empty" lol

Re: Can I recalibrate the miles to empty guage?

I disagree with you guys who think it's fine. It's extremely pessemistic in mine. Even on the freeway at ultimate economy, mine chucks a fit and tells me I'm zero to empty. I fuel up, and there is always more than two gallons in it. Not ideal for long trips, I'm forever fuelling up!

I don't know of a way to re-calibrate, I suspect getting into the tank and giving the sender a mild attitude adjustment would be the only way.....

Re: Can I recalibrate the miles to empty guage?

Personally I'd rather be safe than sorry. My truck is a bit more spot on with its reading than my Jeep was (I actually think it is close to dead-on but I don't want to test it)... I got it down to 7 miles to empty and I put in 25.5 gallons and it is a 26 gallon tank - I didn't like that very much lol. Think of how little fuel a half gallon is sloshing around in a 26 gallon tank. I figure if I hit any kind of hill I'd be done. These days I start looking for a gas station when the light comes on! I think that running out of gas is probably one of the dumbest thing people can do.
