Re: CAUTION!! WK factory Roof Racks

thanks for the heads up... i think this is especially important with anything that can work like a parachute and create upward force on the roof rack. I had a friend put a mattress on his roof rack on his subaru and at 65mph on the highway it ripped the rack right out, major structural damage to his hood.

Good to know. Funny you mention the mattress thing Craig because we need to pickup a new mattress soon. I will def be strapping it down through the windows.

Re: CAUTION!! WK factory Roof Racks

I did not take any photos, in retrospect I should have.

I asked the dealership to put some washers behind the repair and to add washers on the other side.

Did they?? I really do not know. The dealership did not win any of my confidence on this event.

I am considering getting a set of tracks like I had on my Ford Excursion and make sure they are installed with good size fender washers at all points possible. For the time being I am safety strapping through the interior of the car.

First thing I have to worry about is getting this raised. Tired of using my air dam as a snow plow and a side plow.

Re: CAUTION!! WK factory Roof Racks

Great info as I plan to regularly carry 2 snowboards on top of my jeep this winter. Is there enough space between the roof and the upolstery to add a washer and nut? If so that might be a good solution to spread out the load more evenly.

Re: CAUTION!! WK factory Roof Racks

WOW! I've been running skis and snowboards for 3 years and never crossed my mind this could happen. I'm going on some streches of roads posted at 75mph. Now I'm going to check mine out and see about making it stronger. Thanks for letting us know.

I have carried surfboards for years and never had this type of problem with any of my Fords. This is my first Jeep.

It seems that the factory bolts are not reinforced with any washers or additional metal. This is a major design flaw as the same thing can happen with any broad piece of equipment carried on the roof (Kayak, Canoe, Storage pod).

Fortunately no one was behind me, so there were no injuries. Had my surfboards gone through someones windshield there could have been a deadly accident.

I now reinforce for safety with web strapping through the vehicle passenger compartment, just in case and since I have no confidence that the dealer actually reinforced anything.

Chrysler repaired it under warranty. The dealer said they reinforced both sides with washers (at my request). I have since registered this with the federal government site that determines if there should be a recall. Especially important because the dealership couldn't have given a damn.
Curious because I carry a lot of crap on the roof. Your rack ripped completely off?? All 8 inserts pulled out and surfboards landed on the road?
I'm planning a reinforcement project for the winter with the addition of some additional mounts. I'll put together a write up when I'm done with some pics.

Re: CAUTION!! WK factory Roof Racks

The SRT roof rack is not a roof rack at all. They are just covers and cannot be used for anything. Just so you know.

Good info. I sometimes carry a canoe but do tie down the front and back.
