Hello Nick,

I am thinking of taking off my TB on my 5.7l and cleaning too and also cleaning inside the intake. Then add a catch can to stop all the oil crap blowing on my clean TB. Was it hard to take off and put back on did your jeep throw any codes with taking it off. Did you disconnect the neg on battery?

Thanks

Re: changed pcv valve

Hey guys - 2007 GC limited with Hemi, 52k miles. I'm experiencing the same idle issues as you all and am making a weekend project of changing the PCV and cleaning out the TB.
As far as the TB is concerned, are there any torque specs to follow? Or just the old "half-past hand tight" rule? Any connections on the TB that need to be disconnected? I did some searching on this and another forum but came up empty. Thanks for your help.

Chris,

Yes I did unhook my negative battery cable. Once you get the intake off (I have a FRAM intake so it was even easier than the stock air box to remove) the TB is a piece of cake to remove. There is a connecter on the top of the TB, just push/slide the red clip and pull it off. Then there are four long bolts on the corner of the throttle body that you take off and it slides right out. I also put a micr-fiber cloth over the opening to prevent anything from getting in there while I had it off, not that it would really matter after seeing all the gunk inside the engine down past the manifold. It literally looked just like my TB before I cleaned it, the entire thing covered in thick, black layer of crud.

I used isopropyl alcohol, water, and an old t-shirt to clean the TB. Be patient and prepared for a solid hour of cleaning if yours is anywhere near as dirty as mine. My forearms were literally sore from the constant rubbing trying to get it off little by little.

Then re-install, bolt back up, attach the connector, and put the intake back on. Attach battery cable. Fired right up, didn't throw any codes at all.

Since cleaning, which was done within a week of changing the PCV & EGR valves, I do seem to be getting slightly better mileage. I would guess from my previous ~11.5-12 mpg around town I'm seeing closer to 12.5-13.5 calculated on EVIC but not corrected for larger tires. This could be a combination of the 3 maintenance tasks I performed and possibly warmer weather the week after, but it seems I really noticed the improve MPG following the TB cleaning. It's hard to tell if much was gained in terms of throttle response.

After seeing all the gunk inside the engine, I too plan on getting a catch can and doing a Seafoam treatment to try and start cleaning up the engine, hopefully.

My Jeep is 2005 a 5.7L with 75K miles. 3.5" x-factor lift, 255/65/17 revos, Gibson catback, Diablo predator 87, FRAM intake. I've been running Royal Purple Synthetic for the last 4500 miles but plan on switching t0 M1 synthetic in 500. I changed both diffs and transfer case fluid 4500 miles ago as well.

Good luck and hope this helps!
-Nick

I just torqued them half past hand tight, have a torque wrench but forgot to even look up the specs. I think you'll be fine without. Yes there's a connector.

The attached pics show the crud inside the engine if you can see it

Re: changed pcv valve

Hey Nick .jeff, Looking at your pictures it looks like you can not get a tshirt to clean in there. I just put on a catch can you can see it in my catch can thread. If you got it clean you better order one this week or you will be cleaning it again. I did the CC first to see how much oil the can picks up. My pvc valve was covered with oil so I know I got a lot of oil in the intake. I hope to clean it this weekend.

Re: changed pcv valve

I just removed my 5.7 pcv valve and it was hardly even dirty with very little oil on it, after 63k. NO need to replace since the valve rattles like it should, so just wiped it clean and put it back in. Next is the catch can, and cleaning the TB.
