Decel clunk

I've tried searching, but not really sure what to search for so I need some help. I think it may be a common issue, but my '05 makes a very noticeable 'clunk' when I let of the accelerator, I'm thinking it may just be the torque converter. I seem to remember my ZJ would do something similar when in 4-Hi, but it was always in 2wd on the road. So anyway, the WK usually does it during light accel, then throttle lift. Sometimes it does it on 4 or 5 decels in a row, sometimes it won't do it at all. I'm rounding 94k and plan on some serious service at 100k, but would rather not plan any drivetrain work if this is a non-issue.
I'd love to be able to give an exact cause, but the only consistent is that it's right after throttle lift.

So I'm hoping someone knows what I'm describing and can give me a little insight on what's happening. I bought it used and it seems to be a clean history, but there's no telling what was (or wasn't) done before I got it.

Re: Decel clunk

1st put it in either tow/ haul or drop it to 4th(not drive)and try it.it could just be going in n out of od.
Then check the front axle mounts. there is one on the front of the diff cover, one on the rear of the housing near the drivshaft and one toward the passenger side "framerail" these are notorious for going bad.does it clunk when going from rev to drive? thats when its most noticable.
if thats not it I'd check the u joints and motor mounts next.
Hope that helps

Re: Decel clunk

Yeah, my driveway is at an angle and it does give a good clunk most times going from rev to drive. Right after I has posted this I saw the thread 'Tranny' and it almost seems like he was asking the same thing, but most answers said it was no big deal. I think you're more on to what I'm talking about and I'll try to get out there and check the mounts as soon as it's not raining.
Appreciate it!

Re: Decel clunk

Well, the O/D trick wasn't it.
When I check the mounts, what exactly am I looking for? Loose bolts? Broken metal? I've got a skid plate in the way and it makes it real hard to look at anything. Are there any tricks for checking it? Something silly like putting it up on a rack and shaking the Jeep? Could I see it moving?

I've tried to pay closer attention when it does it and it seems to be way more often at lower speeds (under 45mph) and low RPM (under 2500), then lift. Sometimes it's a heavy clunk that can't be missed. Sometimes it's a lighter, 2 stage clunk.
I'm thinking it is the torque converter, but I'm still trying to figure out the electronic part.

Re: Decel clunk

If it's a constant thunk going from reverse to drive, check your differential bushings. I had just replaced mine and it solved that issue completely. Maybe something to look in to.

Re: Decel clunk

My ZJ did this and my WK does this since new. I think it's very common for Jeeps. I might have read about a fix for it on a forum once, might have been on jeepsunlimited forum, try a search here and over there maybe. I'm used to it and it doesn't really bother me.

Re: Decel clunk

i have this same issue, my driveway is at a slight angle and theres a gutter at the bottom. Sometimes, when i reverse out and then put it into drive i get the clunk. it only happens when i accelerate after switching to drive and doesnt happen all the time just every so often. let me know if you figure out what is causing it and if its anything to worry about

I took it to the dealership and it cost me $373 total. It's definitely worth it, mine was "thunking" about every time I would shift to drive. It fixed it completely. Get it done before it gets any worse, there is a member on here that cost him a thousand dollars to fix the damages it caused because he let it go for too long.

That doesn't sound like what the o.p. is describing.

Re: Decel clunk

It does seem to chunk into drive from reverse, especially if not at a dead stop, but even if it's just at any kind of angle dropping into drive gives a good clunk. I never thought that was too big of an issue due to the QDII. When I park, it rolls slightly, so I just figured it was digging back out.
I've gotten use to the driving clunk, but it still bothers me. It'd be better if it did it every time, then I'd know it was supposed to, but it doesn't seem to have an exact cause and it varies in it's intensity. Like I said originally though, I'm starting my 100k tune-up and don't want to get everything done only to find out I need to pull the drivetrain.

You guys are awesome btw, I just need a good day to get out and get dirty under the Jeep to get more answers.

Re: Decel clunk

Mine clunks too I actually started noticing it after reading this post. If I apply the break, shift into drive and "rock" the jeep...I feel the clunking under the center console. Anyways, I took it in for service today and the techs think something is wrong with the tranny... we'll see tomorrow
