Decided to T bone a Volvo today...

Drove around the block to move the jeep this morning (alt side parking) and this dirty white (aka upstate New York winter camo) Volvo materialized out of thin air right after I decided to try to cross the street. No mechanical damage, headlights and hood are fine, seems like the only thing fubar is the bumper. Well... That and the fact that BOTH airbags deployed. Scared the crap out of me, I think they are powered by some sort of pyrotechnics as the cabin filled with smoke and reeks like gunpowder. The passenger side bag just popped out of the dash from a spot where there were no seams, just ripped right through it. God only knows what its going to cost to repair, many thousands I'm sure. There goes my insurance premium. Eh, maybe they can put an SRT front bumper on as a replacement? Anyone else have any airbag stories out there?

Re: Decided to T bone a Volvo today...

Sorry to hear that, Luke, especially after all the work you've done to it lately. I am wondering why the passenger airbag blew with no one sitting in the seat? Did you have something laying on it? You're right, it'll cost a bunch to get them replaced. My guess (against my better judgement) is that the dealer would be the best place to go for the replacement. This will (hopefully) insure that you get new bags that will work, and not a used one, or maybe none at all reinstalled, as I've heard sometimes happens.

Air bags are typically inflated with an explosive roughly equivalent to a shotgun shell. The older ones were sodium azide, dunno the newer ones.

I would not even think about messing around with aftermarket air bags--unless I had a Honda and lived in a wet climate.

When they go off, they literally explode, and if there is anything else in the explosive charge or path to the inside of the air bag, it will be blown into you--see recent news reports regarding air bag recalls.

The newer ones are supposed to be designed such that they will try to protect you if you are wearing your shoulder harness, a reduced charge from the first generation ones that could literally kill small adults and children.

They can still break bones... which is why owner's manuals don't want people too close to them, and why pretty much every state requires car seats.

Re: Decided to T bone a Volvo today...

I made the call to my dealership guy that I trust (he knows I have a tune and has still let me use the warranty). My dealer outsources their collision work to a shop that's right next door and provides Chrysler parts directly to them. I figured this would be the best way to get it fixed properly, I'm boned on the insurance premium being raised any way so I might as well get the best I can. Nothing was in the passenger seat but I did wack that Volvo square in the side. A text book t bone! Pics to follow...

Nice driving, lucky you didn't kill the guy. Why would you pull out when someone is crossing? Remember, always look both ways...at least twice.

Re: Decided to T bone a Volvo today...

Haha, no I wasn't texting. A text book "____". It's a figure of speech. I did look both ways, I typically do a left right left (as was the case this time), with the snowy weather conditions and the car matching background colors perfectly I didn't register it coming from the right side until I had already started crossing. I had applied the brakes well in advance but got no purchase with the snowy road. Accidents happen.

Could have been much worse. Have 4 bunjee cords keeping it together; even the fog lights still work!

Re: Decided to T bone a Volvo today...

Really makes me miss my old WJ. Had a Protofab plate steel bumper covered in Rhino Liner. But yeah, that may have been much worse for the other driver...

Re: Decided to T bone a Volvo today...

Glad it wasn't any worse and no one was injured. It looks like you can fix the body part yourself if you want. The airbags are a different story though. Good luck, and let us know the outcome.

Re: Decided to T bone a Volvo today...

So my Jeep has been in the shop for over 3 weeks now due to a combination of work load and the inspector somehow missing the deployed airbags on his first appraisal. The final cost for parts and labor is just under 10K (6 of that is all air bag related). I should have it back by Friday but I'm not holding my breath. As a punishment I have revoked my CMR tune privileges until all the snow is melted... Which is probably going to take a while
