Re: Diff Cover Removal - 60K Service

Thanks Matt
Chas if you can you're so much better off doing it yourself, but not only to save money. When I 1st got my Jeep I let a shop change my oil only to find he scratched my grille with his belt buckle. When I was about to wrap my hands around his neck. The boss offered to eat the bill for the oil change, tire rotation, and Inspection. After all of that I still couldn't relax. When I got home I was under the Jeep making sure he had tightened the bolt, and filter properly while checking for leaks.

Chas,

X2.

I do mine every 35-40K miles. Use the utility pump to empty it that way and the quart pump on Mobil-1 75W-140 bottle to put the new lubricant in.

It's not hard.....just stinky. Have fun with your Heep.

Re: Diff Cover Removal - 60K Service

differentials are 15k service interval, I am probably worse than most about maintainence for a couple reasons... Every day I see what happens when you dont maintain your vehicle so especially considering the miles on my baby I am a stickler on my own rig. 3k oil changes (sorry 4500 on my synthetic oil), 15k diffs, ill be doing 30k trans service in the next 2 months or so (not specified, way early for a trans service) along with spark plugs and more diff and transfercase service goodness.

Re: Diff Cover Removal - 60K Service

I was extremely happy that I pulled the cover off on my Jeep at 60k. I thought about just draining/refilling but there was a bunch of residue on the magnet and I was really able to get things cleaned out that I never would have seen just using a pump.

Re: Diff Cover Removal - 60K Service

I just changed mine at 58 k. Removed the cover, cleaned the magnet and inspected the gears.

Scrape the old sealant off the diff and the cover as best you can with a razorblade. Wipe out the old fluid and let it sit for awhile.

Add a small bead of sealant to the diff and a small beas to thd cover. Stick them together hand thread the bolts and cinch them down. Tighten the bolts to spec, let it sit for 20 minutes. Add your oil. Done.

I also painted my diff cover and axle tubes with semi gloss black.

Pretty simple.

Re: Diff Cover Removal - 60K Service

Did you find a lot of gunk around the magnet? I feel like instead of just draining it and replacing the fluid I should remove the cover, that being one of the reasons, to remove any buildup. Maintenance records that I have don't show any other diff drainings. Might be worth the extra work at 59k miles.

If you don't have record of another diff service I would definitely recommend doing it right and pulling the cover.

Re: Diff Cover Removal - 60K Service

The shavings i found on my magnet were very very fine. Nothing alarming. Every other 30 k would be a good time to pullthe cover.

Again the service interval on the diffs is 15k. also consider shavings on the magnet mean its doing its job and IF you need to clean it to make room for more shavings you may as well not waste your money on the service and start saving for a diff overhaul because something its failing, period. Imo sucking it out every 15k is much better than removing the cover every 30k.

Re: Diff Cover Removal - 60K Service

So got it all done today, was pretty simple. Used the T70 torx socket for the front diff which helped. Was pretty simple and should be doing this every so often knowing how easy it is. Thanks for all the help everyone. Diff fluid smells like a**.
