Disappearing Coolant

Hey guys. In the last 6 months I have had to fill my coolant tank up twice. I have never noticed a leak, or anything damp on the Jeep. No coolant in the oil, or no leaking through the exhaust. Any ideas on what is happening to the coolant? The only thing I can figure is it is seaping out the waterpump and drying on the warm engine. I can't really smell anything though.

Any help appreciated.

Re: Disappearing Coolant

probably the waterpump is going bad. They usually only last around 50,000 miles.

Yea, we had to replace my wifes waterpump at around 55,000 and now my Jeep has 53,000 and I guess it's time.

Re: Disappearing Coolant

I had mine replaced under warranty a couple months ago, only 57,000 KM's (35,000 miles) on it at the time.

Re: Disappearing Coolant

i had a beater 96 explorer beofre the jeep and i could fill my coolant resivoir and it would still be dry the next day, and same issue, never noticed any leaks or smoke smells or anything, but as i said it was a beater and i never fixed i guess it was the water pump as well judging by what you guys are saying.

Re: Disappearing Coolant

Likely the water pump but there should be a "cooking" coolant smell from time to time or a small puddle under your front end after the Jeep sits a while....but not always. A cracked cylinder head might be allowing coolant to pass out of the head into the combustion chamber but this would leave a small trail of white smoke behind....especially when the engine is cold.

Drained coolant lately? Maybe you had some more air in it and as it burps overnight your loosing some? Didn't mention how much was lost>> significant amount?

Re: Disappearing Coolant

How's your radiator cap? It's possible if there is not much pressure in the system (if the cap were not sealing), the water part is boiling out (will boil at 212 F sea level ambient pressure) or more specifically evaporating into the air). I would *think* you'd notice some evidence on the underside of the hood though, but who knows.

On my GTO, the radiator was cracked (POS plastic end caps, wtf) and it didn't really show any physical signs of coolant leaking, but my level would get much lower, pretty quickly. After while, I guess it got big enough to start overheating (that and the loss of coolant), so finally figured out what was going on.

Before throwing parts on it, perhaps you can get the cooling system pressure checked? Any leaks will allow the water to evaporate, as I eluded to above...

The Jeep is stock, nothing serviced or drained. Nothing ever replaced. I have had to refill the res. tank twice. It was almost empty both times in a 6 month span.

I guess I will schedule a visit to the dealer since I still have warranty on it. If they see no problems then I will try a new cap.
