Do I sell or keep?... Issues with my WK

There's so many things that have been going wrong with my Jeep I'll try to keep this as short as I can. (It's not though) I basically just need opinions on if I just have the worst Jeep there is or if this all seems typical of these Jeeps.
It's a 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 131K mi. I bought this 4 years ago w/ 77K mi and have done several little mods and changes. I've taken immaculate care of it with oil changes every 3,000. I'm a former equipment technician at New Belgium Brewery and now own a business selling auto parts so I know for the most part what I'm doing.

In just the last 6 months I've spent over $4,000 on repairs and I'm worried there could be more to come. Before that I had several minor issues but nothing too major. Here's most of the list;
  • At purchase- seats were stained and climate control lights out.
  • About 80Kmi replaced faulty head unit w/ 2005 OEM 6 CD Changer
  • CD Changer ended up constantly pulling power from battery when off even though it seemed it was off.
  • So replaced CD changer with REC nav unit and new Mopar battery.
  • 85K Horn randomly got stuck on- wouldn't shut off until I found and pulled the fuse. (Happened at 5AM- woke up the neighborhood)- Initially fixed buy replacing with new wiring harness.
  • 90K REC screen started going out randomly- then for good.
  • Replaced with another used REC that worked for 3 months before the CD changer failed. Gave up and put stock REF radio back in.
  • 90K Horn got stuck again- so replaced with Commander leather steering wheel and SRT8 air bag. Fixed the issue.
  • 95K- Electronic shifter module went out. Found one for only $500 but still a pricey fix.
  • 95K- Had the dealership do a software update to the shifter module and they said my tranny fluid was leaking from the pan.
  • Jeep dealer charged $600 for the transmission service where they replaced pan gasket, trans filter, and did the software updates.- Found out a week later they didn't change the fluid saying a transmission fluid change isn't included with a transmission service and I needed to specify. They then told me the fluid is dark brown and I need to have it changed immediately for another $150.
  • 105K- key fob stopped working. Figured this was easy enough for the dealership. Bought a new key $100+, $25 to cut it, and $45 to program it. They handed me the new key back and said it doesn't work because my ignition cylinder and door lock cylinder are both going out and need to be replaced. After arguing with the service dept. and GM of the dealer they still made me pay full price on the bill.
  • Another mechanic said the key was horribly miss cut but I can't bring myself back there after all this.
  • Then it gets bad...
  • 120K- water pump failed. Replaced this and the thermostat
  • 125K- Transmission completely failed on a busy highway. Overall this took 2 weeks and cost over $3,500 for a used 90Kmi transmission, labor, and a new transmission control module (they swore this caused the tranny to fail)
  • 131K- 2 weeks ago- Starter and battery both somehow failed at the same time. Starter tested bad so replaced (worst DIY ever) still wouldn't start so replaced battery as well and again.
  • Now went to check fluids today- I've always gotten a small amount of air in my coolant lines and no mechanic has ever found where. I'm just in the habit of bleeding the air every month or two- never much but always some. Bleeder valve stripped on me today- little rounded when I bought the car but today it finally gave.
  • My oil level was 2 quarts low today and it's only been 1,500 miles. I've always added a 1/2 to 1 qt. in between changes and there is no leak. (This happened once before last year on a road trip) Under the car looks spotless with no puddles. Also no smoke from the exhaust, and no discoloring to the coolant.
  • Is my engine or head gasket now going out?
  • I'm only being offered $4K-$5K trade in from a few dealers. It's my 3rd Jeep and I don't want to sell Private Party if this could go horribly wrong for a buyer.
  • I really want to keep it as I have the 08 SRT Front end, side step moldings, painted handles, 20" WK2 wheels, and so many other Mopar/ OEM mods. It's almost done and almost paid off but I'm moving to Cali this summer and can't afford or justify to my wife another repair.
Any thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated. I just don't have any idea what to do at this point. Thanks!

Re: Do I sell or keep?... Issues with my WK

This seems to be a common thing with Jeep owners. I'm keeping mine until it truly costs me serious money (I've had issues, too, only had it for 5K miles and already planning to dump) and then dumping it for something not made by Chrysler. I'd suggest dumping it the next time it really causes you grief. The resale on these vehicles tells you all you need to know.

ALWAYS
LOOK
AT
RESALE.

That tells you how much it's worth in 20, 50, 100K miles, and how much something is worth at any point it its life is usually related to how much of a POS it is at that point. I don't care what koolaid you drink, thems the facts (unless we are talking collector/limited edition cars, etc. which we are not...).

Re: Do I sell or keep?... Issues with my WK

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. The first thing I would do is quit taking it to the ripoff stealer. They're in it for the money, and many of them don't know as much as you or me. Sounds like yours is one of them if they can't even cut a key properly. That being said, I've had mine for going on 5 years now (almost 90K and never, ever take it to a stealer.....do it all myself) and in that time I've only had and EGR Valve and O2 Sensor failure. I've also modded the heck out of it (nearly 100 hp more than stock), and I am not easy on the throttle. I am very proactive on maintenance though, and do all services on time or close to it. I also have a DashHawk powertrain information monitor so I can monitor, in real time, most systems and functions in the engine/transmission. I also periodically run my diagnostic tool (Autel MaxiDas DS708) on it to make sure everything is working as it should. The only way I'd ever get rid of mine is if it got wrecked. Then I'd part it out. I do recognize that some vehicles have more issues than others, and even more so when operated in harsh climates. If I lived in such a climate, I would be even more anal on the maintenance.

In the end, I think you'll have to make the decision whether it's worth it for you in the long run. Sounds like you have it set up pretty much the way you want/like it (as do I), so weigh that (and potential future maintenance expenses) against the cost of a newer vehicle. Remember though that many of the newer vehicles have big problems too, especially now with all the recalls by many of the manufacturers. Personally, I don't worry about depreciation/resale value, as I usually keep my vehicles pretty much forever. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Also, before you make any decision you may want to, at a minimum, do compression and cylinder leak down tests to verify the overall condition/integrity of the engine's rotating assembly. If either checks out poorly, determine the cost of repairs and go from there.

Re: Do I sell or keep?... Issues with my WK

Had my 99 Laredo 4.7 10yrs very little problems. Sold it to my brother when I bought my 09 4.7 had it 5yrs and zero problem but maintenance on both were done properly. Jeeps if maintained properly will last if not you will pay the price. If it starts to cost you an arm and a leg its time to sell. A lot of people buy jeeps drive them 5-6 yrs and sell them without doing anything to them and the next guy pays the price.

Yeah, that's why im not selling 'six shooter' any time at all. While I am super religious on maintenance, I could sell it because of what I know I have put it thru. Not only is it my DD but it does see the occasional track duty too and has been ran at high RPM. Im only just under 69k miles and almost 30k of that is from me. still runs like the day I bought it (just a heck of a lot faster).

to the OP, I'm sorry you have issues in yours that are costing you, some of those things are not cheap eighter, I say sell it. I would not however give up on Chryslers tho, they have come a long way from where they used to be.

Re: Do I sell or keep?... Issues with my WK

Most vehicles with 130k plus miles will need a lot of repair work done, and Wks are very maintenance intensive compared to anything else I've owned over the last 35 years. Anything that goes wrong can be fixed, but if the owner cannot do the work, its not financially worth keeping a high mileage vehicle. ... I have a friend with a 2002 Grand Cherokee and he finally gave in after sinking thousands into repairs the last few years, with more and more stuff going wrong as time goes by.

Not for me. Most maintenance intensive vehicle I owned was my 1992 gmc yukon. I had to dump 1k into it just to get it to pass emissions in maryland. Had 7 radiators, 4 water pumps. Intake gaskets, 3 distributor caps. Blown t case, leaking rear main. I couod keep going bro. Its just under 200k miles. Gm 350 v8
