Door Glass - Tempered vs Laminated?

Ok, so some rat bastard broke my passenger window last night while I was at a friends house. Yeah, no worries except for the fact that I'm totally confused about reading the WK parts PDF from wkjeeps.com. I'm not saying its accurate or inaccurate, but apparantly the parts catalog that Safelite uses is also inaccurate or we both misinterpreted it. Hindsight 20/20, I should have checked the other windows but I tend to believe many things I read.

I discovered my 2007 Overland has tempered glass on all the doors. The VIN number identifies body styles as follows:

4=Laredo
5=Limited
6=Overland
7=SRT-8

However, the WK parts catalog refers to the Series with different nomelclature.

Series =

H=HIGHLINE
P=PREMIUM
S=SPORT
X=SPECIAL

So is it safe to assume that the Overland is a HIGHLINE? That's the only model listed with tempered glass instead of laminated.

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Door Glass - Tempered vs Laminated?

All glass - excluding the windshield - will be tempered no matter what model you have.

The glass is tempered on side and back windows to allow you (or the fire crew) to smash it should you need to escape from the vehicle... The moonroof is also tempered.

Re: Door Glass - Tempered vs Laminated?

Yeah, I'm not so sure all models have tempered glass. According to the WK parts pdf, only the HIGHLINE has tempered door glass. The PREMIUM, SPORT, and SPECIAL series all call for laminated door glass. That's why I'm confused as to the nomenclature used in this document vs. Laredo, Limited, etc...

"Laminated glass should have a logo which states SECURE SHIELD"

Re: Door Glass - Tempered vs Laminated?

the side windows on mine were laminated, that is why they did not smash into tiny pieces

Hopefully the cinder block bounced back far enough not to scratch your Jeep!

Yeah, I believe only the liftgate glass would not be laminated. It's hard to tell from the WK_parts, but that's what the technician said. So if you find yourself submersed in water, your best escape route is through the liftgate glass

Yeah, I wish my glass was all laminated. It seems safer and more secure, and there aren't a million tiny bits of glass to clean up. I had small fragments of glass all over my Jeep! I don't know how they broke my window, but flying bits of glass set off the alarm. There was bits of glass everywhere inside the vehicle with the majority in the passenger seat. What a pain in the ass!! Reminds me that I need to buy a shop vac.

Re: Door Glass - Tempered vs Laminated?

the liftgate is definately tempered, i have known people that have slammed it closed on cold days and it pretty much exploded on them. the cinder block put a dent in my door pillar too, i was pissed. but i went and got security tint on ebay the next day. the stuff is amazing you cant even smash it with a hammer. i put an extra piece on my old window and tried breaking through, it took alot of hits. no thief is gonna hit it that many times, i highly recommend the stuff.
