Dropping Front Dif?

Is it possible to drop the front dif without remvoing the axels from the wheels, I.E removing brakes, ball joints etc?

Re: Dropping Front Dif?

If this is to change the upper front diff bushing, you should be able to rotate it around to get access.

I believe someone posted a nice write up on doing this...

Re: Dropping Front Dif?

Here it is:

Differential pinion mount/bushing replacement

Still not an easy job, but better than the alternative.

Re: Dropping Front Dif?

I have to do the hardest one to get to. The bushing that is at the back top of the front diff, it would be #3 in the thread with the pics. It does not seem that there will be a way to change this without dropping the diff.

Re: Dropping Front Dif?

That's the one I'm thinking of.

I am pretty sure once the front drive shaft and all of the diff mounting bolts are removed, the entire differential will drop down and you will be able to rotate it around to get access to the top bushing.

I'd wait until someone else confirms it (I haven't done this job) before running out and tearing things down, but I think a couple of members have tackled this job that way.

You'll of course want a transmission jack to hold the diff in place while taking out the mounting bolts, and think about the order to remove them.

Re: Dropping Front Dif?

Yes, the diff does just spin down. If you have a limited, MAKE SURE THE SOLENOID IS DISCONNECTED... furthermore watch the solenoid connector on the housing, it is easy to catch this and damage it on things while your rotating the diff around.

Re: Dropping Front Dif?

Thanks! I don't have a limited thankfully. Do I need to remove the crossmember or anything else? Also, I have to replace the CV boot on the back of the front driveshaft where it meets the transfer case. Is this hard to do? I see you can buy a CV rebuild kit for this just want to make sure the front driveshaft is able to be repaired?
