Question Engine Oil on spark plugs Help!!

Hello All,

I am doing my first spark plug change on my 05 HEMI. Well once I got to the two back passenger side plugs they had oil on them, All the other plugs no oil and looked fine. What does this mean? Oh the driver side front plugs are a bitch.

ChrisWK
Oil on the outside of the plugs -or- on the firing surfaces of the electrodes?

Have read that valve cover gasket leaks sometimes allow oil to seep around the top of the plugs at the aft end of the engine.

Re: Engine Oil on spark plugs Help!!

Hey Walt,
Here are some pictures of the spark plugs,

Is this something covered under a power tran warranty? In a couple days should I check the new plugs to see if they got oil on them?

Re: Engine Oil on spark plugs Help!!

its your valve cover to sparkplug tube seal... on the 5.7l I cannot remember if they are serviced individually or if they are in one gasket piece.

X2. You can look down the hole afer a week or so. Might want to use a clean cloth and clean it out first, then look after 1 week.

Looks like gaskets are a set: http://www.wkjeeps.com/misc/Parts/2005_wk_parts.pdf

Re: Engine Oil on spark plugs Help!!

If the PCV valve is plugged or not working, it can cause a buildup of pressure. This can force oil and vapors past the rings and valve guides into the combustion chamber.

Re: Engine Oil on spark plugs Help!!

I think the pcv is just off the oil fill tube...it screws in and out. Cheap and easy to replace. It could be what the others say...but I dont think so since theres no oil on the electrode.

Re: Engine Oil on spark plugs Help!!

Since the oil is on the outside, threads n such i'd bet its the gaskets. The pcv on the 5.7 is on the pass side towards the rear of the manifold, under the cover.you need to turn and pull the top (I had to use a plyers) to get it out.I cleaned mine with carb cleaner.you need the check ball to freely flop around.

Re: Engine Oil on spark plugs Help!!

Its a buildup of oil in the sparkplug tube... as the sparkplug is unscrewed it coats the threads. been there seen that. I could agree that buildup of crankcase pressure could still be a cause of the failure of the tube seal and if its the pcv valve in the oil fill tube its like 10bucks +/- from the dealer (some are uber expensive though).

replace the valve cover gasket and pcv valve.

Just to point out, no arguments here... I know you know how this works because you said in your previous post, a lack of oil on the electrode would indicate that oil is not getting into the combustion chamber. Your plugs would be fouled up if you were buringing off oil and vapors from the crankcase especially if its just 1 or 2 cylinders because the computer stands no chance to balance that 1 cylinder out using the o2 sensors.
