WIth the scissors jack, hand tighten all the lugs, then lower the car and remove the jack, then do the final tightening, then you wont have to worry about the jack falling.

Everything mentioned above and I also always put a rim and tire under it just incase.

Tighten the lugs by hand, then use the lug wrench to tighten them down after the vehicle is lowered, and the jack removed. Torquing on them with the scisoor jack raised is asking for an accident

I know this thread was bumped from the depths, but a good trick I use is I put a hockey puck on the cup of the jack. It prevents marring caused from metal to metal contact. I've been doing this for years and it works like a charm.
