Fun morning.... Loss brakes/steering

So I go to leave for work this morning. I stop before turning out of my sub and let the brake off, go to turn... No stearing. Feels like when the car is off. Go to put the brakes on and no brakes(feels like when the car is off and you pump them, stiff as a board). No dummy lights, no codes, no nothing. The Jeep did NOT STALL. The jeep was still running and I coasted right into the street! I mashed the brake pedal as hard as I could, and got it close enough to stopped to shove it into park and turn the car off. I restarted it and everything is back to normal!... So I take it straight to the dealer by my house... 2 days just to look at it!!!! They told me I need an appointment. I look at him and said ok so next time I think my car my brake I will try and make an appointment before hand... dumbass. Anyways I drove it carfully 30 miles close to work to a dealer that is pretty good. So that sucks... Luckily I have the extended warrenty until novemeber 2011!!

So Yea I am driving a PT Cruiser with no power mirrors(im spoiled) and its such a tiny car.

So thought I needed to rant... I know the dealer is going to come back with "cannot duplicate" B.S. So that is going to suck.

Re: Fun morning.... Loss brakes/steering

That's the dealer line around here every time too. I'm currently waiting until Friday to get a brake warning message looked at because that was the first available appt. Went to 2 different dealers and the closest appt. I could get was 6 days out. Either every Chrysler on the road around here is a huge POS and needs dealer servicing to the point they're backed up that far.....or they'd rather do oil changes than fix cars.

Good luck with your issue. At least it's under warranty.

Hey Mike if it happens again before the appt at the dealer you could always just put in neutral and stop via the e brake in an emergency. Its not ideal but something to think about prior to a future emergency situation.

Yea I thought of that after the fact... Luckily No one was coming either way... Only coasted about half way out. But trying to drive to the dealer and going around some corners, you start thinking about if the steering gave out then, I would be screwed. I really hope they find something b/c that scared the crap out of me.

Re: Fun morning.... Loss brakes/steering

If the dealer really pisses you off you could always drive it through their showroom to demonstrate the issue...lol!

I would check your drive belt tension, pulleys, steering/brake fluid and vacuum lines.

Re: Fun morning.... Loss brakes/steering

So the dealer just called.

Dealer: "Your PCM flash is out of date. Thats the only thing we can see. We dont know if that caused it though, But your spark plugs are a little dirty and so is your coolant. That is $170 to replace your plugs and $150 for your coolant. I dont think that cause it though. Do you want us to change the plugs and coolant?"

Me "Um No"

Do you think this is legit, that a flash could be out of date and cause it? I have a hard time thinking that caused it because it was fine up to his point, other than a check brake system or something like 6 months ago i never got checked out.

Re: Fun morning.... Loss brakes/steering

Sounds like they are milking you!

Spark plugs and coolant have nothing to do with steering and stopping. I'd tell them that I appreciate their concern for my spark plugs and coolant but that is not what I brought it in for.

Drive it through their showroom and call the insurance company and the local news (remember the whole Toyota issue)...LOL j/k.

Re: Fun morning.... Loss brakes/steering

So I had to meet with a professor after work today So i was out in Southfield pretty late. So I was on my way back to the dealer (school, work, dealer all in a 3 mile radius) when I get the call, "I am sorry but the tech went home and didn't flash the jeep. You can either leave it or take it home and bring it back tomorrow." I told them I was 5 minutes away and would just pick it up(since they really didnt find anything wrong). So Then I got pissed though. They called me at 4:20 and told me my car would be ready shortly, then call at 7 and say it never got done. So I went in there and bitched the guy out that i was just waiting around for 3 hours for the jeep and its still not finished... That Now I have to waste more of my time to bring it back. I asked him how long the flash would take... "1 hour" Really to just plug in and upload it! I was also pissed because my drivers side mirror (the actual glass) shakes pretty bad at above 50. They came back with the typical response that we have all heard so many times, "Can not replicate" So I kinda bitched at him and asked him if they even drove it. Of Course he said they did. I asked how did you NOT see it. Well after a couple minutes I asked for the service manager... Of course he is gone for the day. He leaves at 4 tommorow too... About the same time I get off too... I might swing by tommorow to complain to eh service manager. The least they could have done after screwing up is give a free oil change...

Re: Fun morning.... Loss brakes/steering

Free oil change using the same filter and wrong type of oil and not enough no doubt... find another shop and report them to the BBB. That's some bullshit.
