Gas light question?

How many gallons of gas are left when the gas light comes on?

I'm not sure if you can predict the exact amount of gas left in there until you fill it up. I think the light comes on based on how your driving at the time, someone with a heavy foot will have the light come on sooner than some who is accelerating slow and coasting a lot. I think it comes on based on how far it calculates you can go based on the way you are driving, therefore it would be different for everyone...

Sorry, this logic makes no sense, the light is set up to come on when the level of gas in the tank reaches a certain point...it has nothing to do with how you drive, it'll come on sooner if you drive more spiritually, but it would come on when you have a certain amount of gas is left, mine used to come on around 14-20 miles left

Where is your pin in the gauge when it turns on. today mine was on empty... but 3 gallons is far from empty... that is still 3/10 full. only took 17 gal. What I'm wondering has anyone tried getting the extra 45 miles out of it?

I believe the gas light is based on remaining mileage range. Not specifically fuel level. The 30 miles sounds about right. That 30 mile figure is based on your current MPG. If you are in the city, you may have a few gallons left (10-15 mpg), if you are on the highway, that may be less (18-22 mpg). I will try and find out as my DTE is like 40 miles right now.

I feel like mine comes on when everytime when the EVIC calculates 10 miles to empty but I am not sure.

So the light comes on when:

A) There are X gallons remaining in the tank. (would be the same for everyone)

or

B) When your Miles to Empty reaches a certain threshold. (amount of gas left would vary based on your EVIC AVG MPG calculation)

Which is it?!?! I've been wondering this since I bought this thing.

I think its x gallons... Just depends on current mpg when it trips the evic

im all or finding out whats the gas but i just wanted to mention, letting you tank get that low is never any good for your jeeps. lower it gets the more crud you will get up in your lines... so keep that in mind when anyone is running real low on gas...i mean low..

Alright I'm going to question this fact... I don't want to start a :slapfight: but i figured I would ask...

  1. Isn't this a dual filter system.
  2. With any dirving the gas will be in constant movment always stiring the "Crud" up
  3. Where does the pump, pump from? If the bottom then the crud would always find its way towards the lines with my previous point. if it pumps from the top with a tube to the bottom (which I dont think it does) you would still have crud. Stuff that settles would have less chance to get in the lines when empty though.

All in all I don't think you can stop the crud...

no worries lewi- im just passing thru here.. ill reiterate a bit. no harm here:thumbsup:

my post is based on my previous jeeps... anyone can do anything they like with their jeeps but when i was young i use to let my jeeps run real low and on the light all the time... i ended up having to replace the fuel pump once as well. im pretty sure the gas needs to be circulating an act as its own lubricant. the more crud in the lines leads to the fuel pump has to work harder to operate correctly and that tells me ill be paying more $$$ for gas cause the gas will be burning quicker- IMO

but i dont know anything about this-

If its a straight 3 gallons trips the light, than your DTE reading would vary depending on where/how you are driving. (highway-50-60 miles/ city-30-45miles) I dont think this is the case, I think it is tripped by a specific EVIC mileage readying like 30 miles till empty.

Idk people would have to report what evic miles to empty their light trips at and also what mpg they are getting on the evic.

Today mine triped near 10mte and 16.1mpg

I can see where you are coming from and it is logical lol. Now I hope that was true for older jeeps and not our newer jeeps. On the other hand the fuel pump could of wore our or been faulty... Who knows I have not seen the pump to come up with a good explanation... In the older carbed jeeps I could see more fuel being wasted because it would just dump it in more, but with fuel injected I would expect it to cut back the fuel used by the computer. Personally I run a fuel system cleaner ever 4000 miles to help keep the system nice an clean and keeping the crud off of the injectors... lol

On a sidenote I really like your SRT exp in the sig picture!

Maybe it trips based on a "range" left from current mpg... so When ever it calculates that you have 40miles (random distance) till the tank is bone dry it chimes...

hmm... well look at that an actual answer... I wish it was 12% I like even numbers lol

this morning mine tripped at 10 miles til empty, and I was getting 11.5mpg. When I filled up it took 17.83 gallons.

I've had mine trip and my DTE was already 0 when towing my boat (Tow/Haul on), but still had over 4gal left. I've never once put more than 18.5 in the tank even after driving well past 'E'.

It does not appear to be directly related to volume of gas in the tank with all the inconsistency. It seems to trip when the EVIC shows around 10 MTE under most normal circumstances.

That being said, it appears that the warning comes on when you need to fill up anyway. Not because of crud in the tank, but strain on the fuel system. When it's low enough, if you were on the right incline (or created enough sloshing), the pump could be hit or miss and try to pump air through the lines, this is bad for all parts involved. In essence, you always want the pickup fully submerged to have proper operation.

Everyone keep an eye on it and post these 4 things to figure it out better.
DTE, MPG, mileage you drove until filling up, & how many gallons for a fill up.

Doesn't do much good to say something like, "10 miles DTE, 12.7mpg, 17.138 gallons" if you drove 35 miles after it came on. Like I said, I've driven well past 0 miles DTE and still had a few gallons to spare. I've grown numb to the gas pump and stopped paying close attention, but will again now. I started treating the Hemi like a gun and reload often just in case...
