If when you turn off the jeep and you hear a hissing sound after for a second you have a vacuum leak. its the air escaping out of the leak. Any time you have a vacuum leak an easy way to tell where it is take carb cleaner and spray it around the engine bay if you hear the engine rev you have a leak in that area to narrow down the spot. it could be something as somple a a cap fell of from a port or ive seen brake boosters go on cars cuz thats all vacuum related too

many vacuum leaks that can cause issues are small enough that without watching your short term fuel trim you would not be able to tell.

Re: Help-Weird compression (air) noise when starting...

Update: It is in the shop. I was able to reproduce the problem for the service writer. Not sure if it’s related but I noticed a small amount of anti-freeze on my garage floor. It appears I'm down a couple pints in the coolant reservoir. Eleven months ago the water pump and thermostat went out within a couple weeks so we shall see what it is this time. Unfortunately I'm over the 12K warranty on those two items by just a couple hundred miles. Thanks for all the feedback! Once I hear the prognosis I’ll let you know.

Update #2: Dealer just called and surprisingly they will cover the coolant leak (Thermostat again) even though I’m a hundred miles over warranty. They did not figure out what the compression noise was from. Argh…
