Re: Hemi 5.7 WK Headers

I would love some for a reasonable price, $400-$500 range.

Re: Hemi 5.7 WK Headers

Yesterday I had another chat with the exhaust system guy. He said these would be ceramic coated stainless steel shorties and should bolt to the existing head pipes. No mods to any of the 02 sensor wires either. He sounds real interested in setting up a small production run if there is enough demand, and is aware that no one makes shorties for the 5.7 Hemi WK. He has done some preliminary cost work ups and is projecting a $700-800 price point. IMO, not bad for a limited production, bolt on header, especially since no one else makes them, except for the 6.1 long tubes for about $1200-1500. And, they require (I hear) lots of work and mods. to install. I am going to offer him my WK for him to build a completely new set, or modify some existing (LX) headers. Anyone ever remove their front fender wells for any reason? How do they come off? It'll give him a lot more access if they're out of there.

I am also interested if they are between the price point.

Re: Hemi 5.7 WK Headers

The plastic inner fender wells are easy to get out, just some plastic clips. You will have to cut the plastic rivets off on the edge of the fender, but a cheap rivet gun with some POM rivets is only like $12 at Northern Tool. Good luck with the project, I hope it works out!

Re: Hemi 5.7 WK Headers

KidFresh5.7, if you look at the pictures of the stock exhaust manifolds in 555ctsv's post (thanks again 555ctsv), you'll see how bad they are compared to the shorty headers or the SRT setup. When I saw that picture I decided the stock setup had to go. I also took my GCO to the drag races a few weeks ago, and that cinched it for me. The top end power, with a custom 3 in. Magnaflow system, is terrible. Much of it, I am sure, is due to the stock setup. My guess is a minimum of 20 hp more and at least a half mpg increase. When they're done, is the only way to know for sure though.

555ctsv, thanks for the info. on the fender wells. It should make the fabrication a lot easier with them out.

Re: Hemi 5.7 WK Headers

Here's the latest on my WK 5.7 headers caper that 555ctsv got me hooked on. Thanks again, buddy, LOL!!! So far I've taken/done the following in an effort to convince the exhaust guy he should take on this project. Still would be nice if there was more interest though.
1. I took the info. that 555 gave me on his experiences with the LX and SRT headers, complete with the pictures from his thread.
2. I pulled the fender wells out of my WK so he could take a closer look. His comment, "Holy crap, that's a tight fit in there!" He thinks he can see where all the "sticking" points will be, and what all would be involved with modifying an existing set of LX headers. He is also looking for a justification to purchase a mandrel bender, specifically for building headers. Again, if there is enough interest, this may be his justification. He could still conceivably build them from scratch too.
3. I brought him my stock exhaust manifolds off my LX (very similar to the WK) so he could see how the EGR system is plumbed through the exhaust. The exhaust gas for the EGR system is drawn from a short passage in the front exhaust port on the passenger side and then routed to the EGR valve through the head to the valve, and then into the intake manifold. This, he felt, would not pose a big problem.
4. I have offered my WK for as long as he needs it (except when our weather is bad) to fit and fabricate the system. He also may be interested in building 4.7 and 5.7 catback systems. He's not sure if there would be any demand for 3.7 systems. Any interest in any of this out there in WK land? Same with 4.7 headers.
5. He wants a few more days to ponder this, and I think he is going to do a little more research on fixture building, pricing, and the mandrel bender, before he commits to anything. He said to give him a call next week. We'll see then.
6. If he decides not to do this, I think the next best route would be like 555ctsv did....SRT exhaust manifolds. On mine, I would see about getting that front port modified to keep the EGR system alive and functional. That would be mandatory for anyone who has to face emission testing and/or doesn't have the ability to get the EGR system shut off in the PCM.

Re: Hemi 5.7 WK Headers

Here's another update on the custom header build for the 5.7. I talked to Tom yesterday and he said he definitely wants to do the job. He has been looking at several of the Jeep forums and has seen that there is a demand. He also said at first he will modify LX shorty headers using my WK for setup purposes. He is eventually planning to purchase a mandrel bender and all the tooling he needs to build them ( and other vehicles) from scratch. His problems right now are that he is swamped at the shop (been advertising on local TV) and the cost of the bender and tooling is around $160,000. He is planning to do mine in November, and will probably make some preliminary fixtures and at least another set that he can easily clone to meet the initial demand. He anticipates it will be next spring before he starts getting tooled up to build them in mass for the Hemi and other vehicles. He is also working on a web site to market these and other exhaust system components.
