The calibration process you're describing is for the auto high beam feature, and it is a real PITA. The auto leveling for the HID's is simply a sensor based input signal run through a control module which then sends a signal to the leveling motors. While your rig was in they replaced a sensor (or sensors) or the leveling control mudule (located under the right front headlight). The sensors are located on the front and rear axles, and the system also reads information from the ABS system and the EMIC to determine the correct lighting position.

The other thing that's a bit off in this thread is how the system physically works. The light is not moved, the system adjusts the angle of the reflectors, not the HID lighting components.

I don't know if they should cycle through the range every time they're turned on (especially if they're off for just a few minutes while you pump gas, etc), but they should definitely do it the first time they come on. If you aren't certain they're working properly, find a wall with an angle or curb in front of it (I just use my garage door and driveway). Start level then drive onto the incline. If your lights stay at the same level, they're working. If they rise and fall with the rig, they are not working.
