High Mileage Question

Hello all.

Looking at picking up an 05, and found one with nearly 150k miles, but looks to be very well maintained. It's loaded, 5.7, 4wd. One owner and lived its whole life in TX.

Questions being, what should I look out for (if anything)? I'm of the opinion that a high mileage vehicle isn't inherently bad, because typically its a highway cruiser with easy miles rather than stop & go. I was formerly an XJ owner, so I understand "Jeep Quality" and can live with rattles and small problems. I was just curious if anyone is running a Hemi with that kind of mileage and if I should run away because of any known major issues.

Thanks!

Re: High Mileage Question

There are a few of us on here with 150,000+ miles.

The hemi is a great motor, and I have had no real problems with it, even with that mileage. The only common mileage related condition seems to be the EGR valve, which is a fairly simple and relatively cheap fix. The p/s pump is another thing you'll want to listen to.

Other than that, I would listen carefully to the differentials to make sure they don't whine, and listen for a clunk when shifting from Park to drive and reverse.

Of course, you'll want to check all of the typical things you would with a used car. Oh, and check to nake sure the nav joystick works, if equipped.

To be honest, I think I prefer mine since I got over the 150,000...now I don't sweat the little stuff, and am looking forward to seeing how long it'll go, rather than when it was new and every 10,000 miles put on it was a traumatic experience!

Re: High Mileage Question

Something I like to do when buying high mileage cars like that if I'm really interested in buying them is to take it for an oil change and take a look at the oil.

That's a great motor and if the oil looks good and clean (even better if it isn't black as tar but black doesn't really mean dirty) then you know it has been well taken care of.

150k sounds like a lot of highway miles so the transmission and engine shouldn't be in terrible shape despite the higher number.

Re: High Mileage Question

I just rolled over 148k. Just as along as it was taken care of then go for it. Test drive it and make sure everything works.

Re: High Mileage Question

I have close to that milage on mine, but i would never buy a 4x4 with mileage that high. I bought mine at 30k and i know it has been maintained. Unless they have service records, i would pass

Re: High Mileage Question

My current WK has 110K on it and runs like new (2010). I maintain it with extreme analness (or so my dealer says). My '04 WJ had 200K+ before I traded due to a blown head gasket on the 4.7 HO. Ask for service records. If it has been maintained and the price is right, personally, I'd jump on it. If no records, then y ou have to do some investigation. Check the condition of ALL the fluids, including brake. Poor TC/Gear/Brake/Power Steering fluid is a classic sign of poor maintenance.

Re: High Mileage Question

I think anything with that kind of miles is a waste ( imo of course ) , more so to Pameyer, 8500 for a truck with 132 miles seems outrageous. I guess it' just a way of how things work now. I remember shopping for mine, and being told be dealers "190,000 miles isn't even broke in yet " and im thinking my lord. to each his own, it's a truck with a hemi... and 4wd which is used for pretty much one thing.. going off road ( along with haulin the kids around Look at it from a point of what people do with these trucks. Someone else already has 150k miles of being offroad, and enjoying the truck for what it does best.... id take that into consideration any time i buy something like that.

Re: High Mileage Question

If a car is properly inspected I agree with others who say mileage is not an indication of how close to dying the vehicle is, ESPECIALLY with newer rigs, I would rather have a car that spent 150k miles on the freeway than 50k driving around the city.

My jeep was purchased by a company, second owner owned it only 2 years (like 23 months) and put 100k miles on it with southern california and northern oregon addresses in the navigation.

I now have 193k miles, I brought coworkers to lunch last week and the coworker sitting shotty said "this thing feels like it has 5k miles on it". It runs great, I have had no big problems just piddly common problems, trans cooler lines, diff bushings, front ball joints, shocks and struts... Its been a great rig and will continue to be.

Also to the "off roading" comment made, an overwhelming majority ofjeep owners have done no more "off roading" than an occational gravel parking lot... to park... When I look at a 4wd that still has some value, TYPICALLY people respected it, OR you can tell that it was not cared for. Its not 2k dollar cherokee with no fenders, a frankenstien lift and huge tires and "needs a clutch" that has clearly been abused. Most people that buy a WK wanted something that would keep their family safe in the winter and had 4wd capability if needed... of which I live in Portland Oregon, we get snow and deal with ice pretty commonly over the winter, we have mountains with OHV trails and dunes within 2 hrs,, of all places, my dealer doesnt sell 2wd jeeps, period, its weird to see a 2wd jeep, and my last manager in another industry bought a new truck that was 2wd because he never used his 4wd and didnt want to pay for it, as per the usual.

Inspect the vehicle properly (pay someone), and drive it, you can tell if a rigs been cared for driving it typically, it amazes me how many customer cars I drive with less than half the miles mine has and drive like dog crap.
