Skidplate has to come off. What engine do you guys have who didn't have to remove the 'shaft? We tried every angle we could on mine but could not get it out with the 'shaft in place.

Re: How Difficult To Change Starter

What a pain in the arse. My starter randomly does the click without start. I am trying to hold off until the tax time to replace it. Does it only once in awhile, and then eventually catches and starts.

Woo hoo! just pulled my starter without dropping the driveshaft! (2006 JGC 5.7L) I was trying to loosen the shaft bolts with a 3/4 inch craftsman bad boy ratchet and - nothin'. I don't have an impact wrench so I thought I was up a creek. Last ditch effort, I removed the fender well and was able to peek with one eye and reach in and with one hand and after a lot of twisting and turning I was able to pull it out! I did have to remove the heat shield in place before it would come out that was a pain.

Incidentally to all who have clicking starter problems once it was out I bench tested it and as others have noted the problem miraculously disappeared. I did notice that there was heavy arcing on the nut and threads of the hot lead to the starter. I'm betting dollars to donuts that corrosion and a bad connection is the real culprit in some cases. Installing a new one anyway.

2006 JGC 5.7L. Just pulled mine out through a very small opening in the fender well after removing the plastic! No need to drop the shaft! You will need to remove the heat shield on the starter while it's still in place which is a little bit of a pain.

2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7 liter 6

I have changed out entire engines in less time than it took me to get the starter out of this vehicle. Ridiculous.

At least for this vehicle, there is no need to drop the 4WD drive shaft. I was able to persuade the old starter to come out through the hole behind the plastic wheel well cover. You do however have to remove the two bolts the hold on the steering column shaft bracket and push that bracket back, up and out of the way. These two bolts are in the wheel well just to the right of the shock and spring.

Position the starter with the solenoid up and it will come out...not easily but it will come out.

Re: How Difficult To Change Starter

Let me start by saying if the starter needs replacing again I think I'll just burn it in place. But I had the same issues described and replacing the starter seems to have it fixed for now. I did first try the starter relay and you should also because this thing was no joke to pull on a 5.7 hemi.

I got to it from underneath after removing the skid plate and from the side pulling the inside fender cover. I got the fender loose by using a nail punch to drive the center out of the clips. I'll probably have to pick up some new ones tomorrow.

Allow the car time to cool there is no working room at all. You will need a small ratchet and some flexible swivel sockets or extensions.

The heat shield bolts are 10mm. The bolts holding the starter in place are both 15mm. The nut holding the positive cable is 13mm. I was able to rotate the starter out WITHOUT unbolting the drive shaft.

This took the entire day so set aside some time and it helps to have a good headlight and help if you can find it. I have minions (or children if you prefer) that could hold a socket or the heat shield long enough for me to get a bolt started.

Good luck

shafts still in the way in the 3.7, but in a 4x2, so much easier. dropped mine in under 10. had to pull it to install my headers..
