Thoughts?
Months don't matter. Check out this oil analysis.

Furthermore, all oil manufacturers can say whatever they want but THEY will not be paying to replace your engine. I do agree that oil has come a long way, and I do believe synthetic oils are more reziliant to heat and contamination. That said I would NEVER quadruple the manufacture suggested interval no matter what the fluid.

Especially if you have a 4.7l that is prone to sludge anyway, leaving the same oil that gets contaminated with fuel and broken down by heat in for extended periods of time is just not worth the cost savings of pushing it another 1-9k miles.

Not that I am saying there is anything wrong with using these fluids, I just personally dont follow a 3rd parties suggestion whom charges up the ass for the fluid and wouldnt cover any damages.
My last oil analysis. Take into account that I ran multiple road course track days on this oil change. Most of what people hear is wive's tales but the proof is in the analysis.

Re: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?

90% of my driving is highway, so I change the Jeep oil every 4,000 miles with whatever synthetic is on sale at the time.

I change the wife's Cavalier oil every 3,000 miles.

I don't see the point in going any longer besides being lazy. Sure the oil could be good for twice the mileage. But it's only $30 for the synthetic and I'm not about to risk any damage to the engine over $30 every 3 months (or $120/year). Especially since I want my I6 to last into the 300k+ miles.

Re: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?

Last change I switched to Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic. Going to change at 5k. Although I did just check the oil and had to add a full qt. as it was a qt. low...I've got about over 3500 on it since the last change. Is this normal to burn that much?

It is for mine. Usually uses 1-1.5 qts of full synthetic oil in 5K miles. Used more between changes on dino oil. However, a significant part of that goes through the PCV valve into your intake manifold. Now mine stops at the oil catch can.

Thanks for sharing the oil analysis~

The reason I asked that question, If I use synthetic oil, it will take me a year to put 6k miles on my WK. I use dino oil because of this reason and change every 4 months or so.
I might have to think about using the synthetic and change it every year.

Re: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?

So since I'm still debating on which oil I'm going to switch do I just went to the dealer and got the regular conventional oil. Just so that I have a little more time to figure everything out. I was talking to the service rep and he told me that synthetic oil for the 4.7L's is over rated. That I should just stick with conventional oil and switch to a synthetic blend high mileage when the miles get higher. I don't know how I feel about that answer that I got from him....

That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.... synthetic is by far superior... And for your usage most synthetics are rated for a year. Like the Amsoil I run is rated for "Signature Series line, all four motor oils are recommended for drain intervals of up to 25,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first (15,000 miles/one year in severe service conditions)."
