Re: how to change steering wheel

My advice, feel free to take or leave it but DONT DO IT!! If you happen to set the air bag off your car is a written off.

I changed the wheel on my 95 jap crap years ago & that was hard enough, horn didnt work, blinkers went stupid & whippers were just as bad.

Re: how to change steering wheel

I intend on changing mine as well.

Best piece of advice...disconnect the battery before starting.

No 12 volt juice...no chance of the airbag deploying when disconnecting and reconnecting the plug-in connector.

Re: how to change steering wheel

actually there are capacitors that could possibly store enough energy to still fire an airbag even with the battery disconnected...

ways to get arorund this, disconnect the battery for 2 minutes before doing anything, or disconnect the battery cables and touch them together.

airbags are really designed not to just blow, always be safe, put the airbag horn facing up where you set it, so IF it were to go off it would just blow it into the floor not up into the air.

I havent pulled a wk steering wheel but odds are good there is probably something like a 13mm or 16mm bolt holding the steering wheel on. from there you will probably need a puller. with the clockspring DONT LET IT SPIN! If you let it spin then throw the wheel back on with it not centered you can pull it apart turning the wheel. *edit* dont get me wrong, its not spring loaded but it spins pretty easy and can easily get turned around if your not paying attention.

Re: how to change steering wheel

I just changed my steering wheel twice... between today and yesterday in fact!! Basically you take off the air bag with two bolts that are behind the wheel, (10mm)they are a bitch to take off but you have to do it. Once you take off the air bag/horn you will find two cables connected to the back, just un plug them... dont worry you will not explode your airbag!! Then you have to remove the bolt in the middle and that could be kind of a pain... but once you take that off try pulling off the wheel... if that doesnt work, go to a local auto parts store and ask for a "steering wheel remover" yes they actually have a tool for that... it helps pull off the wheel from the column, and boom, should just come right off.

Also, you dont really need to disconnect the battery, i did it without doing it and im still alive... but since its your first time... it might be your safest bet. Good luck!

I'm not sure what color your interior is, but I found an off the shelf perforated steering wheel cover that matches the dark khaki (because my leather wheel started disintegrating at 30000 miles). I always hated the covers but couldn't stand looking at the leather damage, now that it's there I couldn't imagine driving without it- it's much easier to grip!

Re: how to change steering wheel

let me just say an airbag comes out with enough force to kill you easily... there are many things where you can cut corners but this is not one. disconnecting the battery with 1 10mm nut and waiting 2 minutes is not a big enough step to risk serious injury or death. PERIOD.

They do things to prevent accidental deployment as far as circuitry and connector design but it is just not worth the risk, EVER.

Re: how to change steering wheel

the steering wheel and airbag are easy to remove.....just use precautions to de-energize the bag.

05-07's have two screws on the back of the airbag, 08-10's I believe have the clip thingys. Then once you get the bag off...the wheel is held on by one large NUT....LOL. Remove that and then use a steering wheel puller to pull the wheel off. Easy breezy.
