How would I handle in the snow?

Hey guys,

With the Snowboard season ahead, I am wondering how my Jeep would handle in the snow. My 05 WK is lowered with Bilstein shocks and Bwoody springs, and I am running low pro vredestein tires. I am wondering how this 4wd Jeep would handle in the snow... I am used to the nice warms streets of California, but thinking about making a trip to Tahoe this February. Here are the tires....

Here is my Jeep....

Let me know what you guys think? Do people even put Chains on a 4WD SUV?

Re: How would I handle in the snow?

you're going to the slopes dressed like that? Anyways, not sure about Lake Tahoe but where we are sometimes they won't allow cars or trucks, even SUV's without proper snow tires. Those low profiles might be great on the skidpad but won't stand a chance in the snow or even black ice!

Re: How would I handle in the snow?

Depending on road conditions at the time, CHP won't allow you through w/o chains or 4x4 with snow tires. Go here to check road conditions before travelling: http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/statemap.htm
and click on counties you plan to travel through and the individual routes. Here is an example of what you could expect:

I 80 [IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA - SOLANO CO] THE EASTBOUND
CONNECTOR TO EASTBOUND SR 4 /IN HERCULES/ (CONTRA COSTA CO)IS
CLOSED FROM 2200 HRS EACH NIGHT TO 0600 HRS EACH MORNING
MONDAY THRUFRIDAY THRU 1/14/11 - DUE TO CONSTRUCTION - A
DETOUR IS AVAILABLE [IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA & THE SIERRA NEVADA]
CHAINS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4-WHEEL-DRIVE
VEHICLES WITH SNOWTIRES ON ALL 4 WHEELS FROM KINGVALE (PLACER
CO) TO THE DONNER LAKE INTERCHANGE(NEVADA CO) WESTBOUND
TRUCKS ARE BEING SCREENED AT OVERLAND TRAIL /IN TRUCKEE/ (NEVADA
CO) - DRIVERS MUST HAVE MAXIMUM CHAINS IN THEIR POSSESSION IN
ORDER TO PROCEED - PERMIT LOADS ARE PROHIBITED

Not a chance on those tires. Do you still have the stockers you can bolt on for the trip?

yea, i got the stockers... they have been STACKED in the garage for about a year now. Not sure if they are still good stacked so long. Would I need chains for those, or will full tread and 4wd be sufficient.

thanks for all the info guys.. appreciate it

Re: How would I handle in the snow?

Whats going to happen is that you would get through the snow but your going to work 3 times as hard doing it. If you get into any deep stuff then you might get stuck or like I said above, work 3 times has hard getting out. Take it from someone that know about this 1st hand

Re: How would I handle in the snow?

Living in a place where snow is common even in June some years I would say you won't be able to handle or like Marcus said above it will be very tough.

Re: How would I handle in the snow?

To answer your question regarding if people even put chains on a 4WD SUV...yes they do!. It all depends on the type of snow (how wet/thick it is) or ice that you'll be going through.

But as far as the Vreds, low profile or not...one look at those treads tell me you're not getting very far in snow with them.

If your stockers have some good All Season tires on them, even after being stacked, you'll be fine.

If not, get some dedicated Winter-only tires (Snowtrac 3's if you prefer the Vred brand).

Re: How would I handle in the snow?

I agree with everyone above about the tires, but as I said in an earlier post you won't get anywhere without snow tires or chains if the conditions are right. CHP sets up check points in the passes and will not let you through unless you have snow tires or are carrying chains. If conditions are bad enough they won't let you pass unless you are chained up (30 years experience in CA mtns). Other than the expense of buying snow tires (which sounds like you won't be using much to justify the expense) or chaining up, just hope for good weather at the time of your trip. Most the time the roads are clear or passable without the restrictions.

Your Trail Rated. You can go anywhere!

I kid I kid....I heard Vreds aren't that great in snow. I have never owned them. That is what I heard from other members.
