Re: I feel a little safer in my WK now

side impact bags deployed here, not front bags. I would've thought a side hit to the front clip would've deployed the side impact bags, but thats not clear in the photos.

Wow the WK and WK2 have some crappy crash tests. I thought the wk2 was 5 star safety rated. Look at all the wk/wk2 vids.

Re: I feel a little safer in my WK now

Most new airbag sensors need to be physically impacted to deploy. Many sensors are sensitive to directional force. Front sensors being impacted at an angle more than 45 degrees to the side still wont deploy. Most cars made after 2005 only deploy the bags that are needed. A frontal bag deployment during a side impact can actually injure an occupant.

The reason why they dont just set all the bags off at once is an attempt to protect against secondary impacts. If that jeep had been hid broadside the bags would deploy, then lets say it rolls onto its roof at speed, then the curtain bags need to deploy. The key is that the different zones of bags will be needed 1/4 to 1/2 second apart and if the curtains went with the sides then the curtains wont do any good. Airbags deploy in 60 milliseconds and deflate in less than a second.

The bags that are needed are deployed.

Re: I feel a little safer in my WK now

I was T Boned in my 03 WJ almost two years ago. Just got it paid off five months earlier. Woman ran a stop sign in my neighborhood. She never touched her brakes and hit me driver's side right at the rear wheel/door jamb doing about 30mph. Spun us around and the rear wheel caught the curb and launched the Jeep into the air and rolled us. We landed on all fours but the side that dug into the pavement had two tires ripped off the rims. A witness said it looked like the Jeep fell from the sky. there wasn't a body panel that wasn't banged up. Everyone was belted in, me , my wife and two grand neices. Where the woman's car hit us, my older grand niece was in that rear seat. Very little intrusion into the passenger compartment. Strong build. The kids were ok other than being scared, wife has back issues and I'm more or less ok but i probably should have waited before I settled. Still litigating w/ insurance about wife's injuries. Bags didn't go off. Wife said the WJ was like a rock considering the hit and roll. It's kind of shaped like an egg so it rolled well I guess. Got a WK with the insurance payout.

Re: I feel a little safer in my WK now

No side bags or curtain bags in a wj that i know of. Front bags are connected to sensors in the front bumper. With no significant impact to the front of the vehicle the bags will not deploy.

Newer vehicles deploy the front bags in rollovers to supplement the curtains and reduce occupant movement.

Side curtain air bags have been available since 2002

Re: I feel a little safer in my WK now

Good to know. The sensors, wherever they are on your wj may need a direct hit to deploy.

Re: I feel a little safer in my WK now

The airbag didn't deploy on our Liberty. It was clipped from the side. Vehicle was totaled.

Re: I feel a little safer in my WK now

Well, if the driver was more or less uninjured, then it seems the airbags were not needed. They're designed to protect against excessive deceleration forces where the head will be thrown forward into the steering wheel or windshield. The direction of the forces in this accident didn't trigger the airbags. Looks like they worked as designed.

Re: I feel a little safer in my WK now

The driver was and will always be injured from this accident. A side airbag wouldn't have made a difference in this case. Racing seat belts and a head restraint would have helped.
