Re: I used 5w30 instead of 5w20???

Thanks fellas. And Bubba Irf was the one who got me worried by saying "drain it asap" LOL but on my previous cars I've gone up or down a grade depending on the season. But those were leases. This I own.

Yes, follow your heart, what oil does your heart tell you to use??

And I think that people who give false info to someone without even knowing what they are really talking about should be banned for a week. lol.

Re: I used 5w30 instead of 5w20???

This is actually an interesting question, especially for those living outside the States where 5w20 is difficult to find and expensive. Where I am 5w20 runs between $25-30 per quart all the way to $45 if I want Mopar. I contacted Chrysler about using 5w30 or 10w30 and got the following answer
If you have a 5.7L with MDS then you must use 5W-20. If your engine is not a MDS 5.7L then I'm sure that 5W-30 or 10W-30 will give you the protection the engine needs without any damage.”
So 5w20 is only required for MDS operation and you can always disable that with a predator of the flashpaq if you want to use something else.
As for why its necessary for MDS I am not sure but I understand that the MDS works by deactivating 4 of the 8 cylinders under certain conditions by reducing the oil flow/pressure to the lifters which allow the cylinders to stay down and pressure it put again on the lifters allowing the four cylinders to be activated again so I can kind of understand that a different viscosity might create issues given that it all needs to happen in milliseconds.

Re: I used 5w30 instead of 5w20???

Just for reference, I've been running 5W30 in my MDS Hemi for a long tome now.
The Hemi "tap" is a tiny bit louder, but the MDS operation is no different.

I run this oil because 5W20 is impossible to find here in Australia.

I wish I knew that a year ago ... would have saved me a lot of time and money.

Re: I used 5w30 instead of 5w20???

If you require 5W-20 and all you can get is 5W-30 then just add a bit of water to thin it out. Lol.
