Interested in a 2005-2010 WK. Help needed

Hi im interested in buying a 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Im looking to spend under $10,000. I found a cppl 2005-2008 5.7 and 4.7 V8s in my price range. is the 5.7 Hemi reliable or is the 4.7 reliable? Im in Colorado so reliability is the most important factor and i dont know much about jeep/dodge/chryser. Everyone bashes jeep when i asked about reliability on some local facebook groups but theres alot of jeeps out here on the road so they cant be that bad

In general, I think both the 4.7 and 5.7 motors are fairly reliable. I (and many others) are approaching or have surpassed the 200,000 mile mark with little more than general maintenance.

That being said, the WKs require a lot of general maintenance to be reliable, and some people just do not perform this. Also be wary of whether the maintenance was performed correctly. For example, those vehicles with QD2 require specific transfercase fluid that some repair shops substitute with generic transmission fluid. These sorts of things all have an impact on the longevity of these components.

There are also components that are known to age rather quickly, so spend some time on here reading about what people are commonly replacing, so you can check those on any vehicle of interest.

Thanks for the help! Im glad to see that both of those V8s surpass 200,000 miles. What type of genereal maintenance do the Jeep Wks require that most people dont take care of and is there some specific things i should look or hear for when test driving them? Thanks again

I wouldn't be so concerned about the engine; it is the rest of the vehicle. I would not buy any WK with 100k or above, unless all receipts and repair records are kept. As pointed out above, the maintenance on these is critical and costly, far more than any other vehicle I have owned in over 40 years. Might suggest looking at a 4 runner, or similar with high mileage, as they are far more reliable.

Thanks for the help. How about the 98-04 grand Cherokees. Do you know if those are cheaper to maintain?

I never owned one, but a friend has an 04 and its had a lot of issues. GC's have pretty much always been toward the bottom of JD Power ratings.
