Re: Is this 4.7L MPG really something I have to get use to???

Like I said in my first posting, I don't need the whole lecture on if MPG is on my mind, why did I buy a heavy V8!!! I own a fully modded 93' Camaro that on a good day gets 7-8 mpg...I was just making SURE it was normal for these 4.7L Jeeps. Thanks for your guys inputs. And I still am not grasping changing spark plugs every 8k. Just keeps blowing my mind, even if they are only 1.70ea. I have owned quite few vehicles where I didn't check the plugs until 60-80k miles and the plugs were clean and looked almost new. IDK much about these MOPAR motors, but either you got something really wrong with your Jeep or using some cheap spark plugs. 30k on plugs sounds reasonable, but 8k??

That a little overexcessive for only 35000 miles on it??
Naw, I think we're all just having fun about the whole subject. Of course we all would welcome better fuel economy. But like most drivers of a V8 engine, I'm a little trigger happy. Throaty exhaust doesn't help much with the lead foot.

manuf recommends replacing plugs at 30k.
clean air filter helps - cai may improve mileage.
correct oil weight.

I found that fuel economy drops after 60mph... I seem to get the best at 55-60. Anything faster and it drops a little. I definitely don't get great mileage at 70mph. Keep the A/C off.

Did it have the 30,000 manufacturer recommends maintenance done on it when you bought it? If not, there are other things on the list of to-do's.

I think the plugs are champion. Not sure where they rank in the spark plug line up. Changing them every 8k seems excessive, but to each their own. Like I said, manuf recommends every 30k on those... best to stick with their guidelines or better.

Yea, this thing was owned by a older couple and when I bought it they showed me and gave me all the recommended maint. paperwork the owners had done to it. everything was done to the "T" on this Jeep, including the plugs.

You seem surprised at 14mpg.... you shouldn't, that's what your truck is rated for...

So, to answer your question, yes, you should expect 14mpg in city driving... not to mention your specific driving routine.

How often do you reset it?

I haven't reset mine in forever and I don't deviate more than +/- .1 MPG on the EVIC. (currently at 15.8 mpg on EVIC, calculated by hand at 16mpg).

If you recently reset it, give it some time to get more data.

Just to hammer in what's already been said... go light on the pedal on the right, let off when approaching a red light (i.e. shouldn't be going straight from throttle to brake, rather throttle, to coast, to brake) <-- HUGE difference for me, huge.

Re: Is this 4.7L MPG really something I have to get use to???

Don't know when the last time it was reset, but I haven't done it since I drove it off the dealer lot. I have totally changed my driving habits for this Jeep, just to test out the MPG and it is still dropping....But granted I only drive bout 8 miles each way to work, so the thing never fully gets warmed up. I will see on this 1000 mi road trip and see how she does...
