X5 was a trade, had been in few accidents (on Carfax report) and had Check Engine Light on when I pulled into the lot. I knew of $6k in repairs pending so I did not argue with the $3k trade. F150 was in great shape - lowered, Lightning front end, on 3rd tranny - sold to a very happy undocumented Person for cash.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK resale/trade-in value SVCKS!!

lts common knowledge that on average you lose 20% when you drive a new car off the lot.

OP needs to put his big boy pants on, the fault lies in his homework or lack off it prior to buying.

Theres no set laws to what brand loses what, for instance VWs have great resale values in there range compared to other brands, unless you have a Toe-rag,which you cannot give away.

Ugh, dont get me started on the "Toe-Rag". Had a guy pull into my shop with one a few years back, vehicle had 37 miles on it, he wanted an alarm...however they was a few...problems. Check engine light, airbag light, power locks, windows and seats didnt work. Also the radio would randomly turn on....why he came to be for an alarm and not back to VW is beyond me.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK resale/trade-in value SVCKS!!

ahhh, the ole "what? my car/truck/suv is worth less that what I paid?". Yeah.

What did you PAY for it?

The OP had an original MSRP of $45, and was offered $20-27. Not too bad for driving it for 2 years, unless you PAID $45k originally.

The dealer will offer you crap pricing, cause they can. You don't have to take it. You can tell em what you want, what rate/mos you want, price you wanna pay (within reason). If its something they can do, they will do it. sometimes you have to be willing to walk.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK resale/trade-in value SVCKS!!

The only vehicle I made out on when trading it in was a 03 VW Golf TDI, with 66K miles on it they gave me $500 less than I paid for it on a trade. It was perfect timing when gas hit $4/gal.

Well with the new model is out and the old model is old style the dealer will not give you shit for it. If I was you sell it on your own get what you want for it.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK resale/trade-in value SVCKS!!

A new vehicle is a big expense, and probably the worst investment you can make. Average depreciation is 15-20 % per year according to bankrate.com and Jeep WK's depreciate faster than most vehicles according to the ratings. To the OP, Leasing would have been a much better alternative than buying and trading after 2 years as you could have saved $ several thousand.

The statement here about selling to a private party and them not having to pay tax is not true everywhere so beware. Here in Washington they have what is called Use Tax. They tax you on the Price Guide Value for the vehicle and tax you at the tax rate of where you live in the state when you get the title transferred. It is happening to me right now, I was caught completely unprepared when I went to get the title transfered when they said that be $1,100 on a 05 WK. I paid $9000 cash plus my old jeep valued at $2000. So be careful!!
