Jeep Over Heating sometimes ????

Hi all.

I have a Jeep Grand WH 3 lte Turbo CRD. ( 2006 )
Lately a few thing have started happening which I think are connected somehow..

Firstly, My cabin heat seems to play up... by that i mean it used to take less than a minute for the
heat to blow out for the demister. Now I need to play with the Temp Nob until it decides to change to hot...
Could take up to 5 minutes... by this time I have ice forming on my eyebrows..

Now the second thing that has happened is the water TEMP now runs a lot hotter than normal.
It will go to three quarters at which time the huge fans cut in.

Now here is the confusing bit.....
If I turn on the cabin heat..... and It finally decides to blow hot air , the engine Temp immediately returns back to normal.
If I turn off the heat..... the engine water temp starts to warn up back to 3/4...

I'm Guessing its the Thermostat .......

Does anyone know where I would find the Thermostat in a Jeep ?

Your thoughts...

Thanks

ROB

Re: Jeep Over Heating sometimes ????

G'day.

I think it's the heater core on it's way.

But wouldn't hurt to check the thermostat. It's just that it doesn't make sense that the thermostat is preventing the heat to be blown.

Anyway, it's what I think.

Thanks for your quick reply.
If it is the Heater Core, is that where I should be
looking for water on the floor ?
Cheers

Re: Jeep Over Heating sometimes ????

You got a point there. If it's the heater core, it would leak, AFAIK. Would it leak always or if it's playing up, dunno.

How long since it first started happening?

EDIT: Just a few other things for you to check before going at the thermostat or the heater core.

Did you check the obvious (radiator fluid and coolant level)?
Is the radiator cap losing pressure, can you see any spray when the temperature rises?
Are there any cracks or leaks out of the radiator, especially after you had it parked somewhere?
Did you check the hoses leading in and out of the heater core inside the engine bay if there are any sprays around (it happened to me once, easy fix)?
Did you do any 4WDriving in mud or water where you could've clogged up the thermal fan, if so, it needs to be TAKEN OUT and washed properly?
Since your is a CRD, it has the same hydraulic fan as the HEMI (mine), which is driven by the steering pump, so did you check the steering fluid level?

Reading the post this is all that was running through my head, if your low on coolant your heat will do goofy things as it will depend on when coolant is making it to certain passages and when its not. the 3.0l is an EXPENSIVE engine, I would get this figured out before you need a motor

Hi all.
Thank you all for your replies.
I'm not losing any water and the radiator is full.
. I get the feeling that the problem is the thermostat so
I'll replace it and see...
Is it a straight forward job or should I track down a manual ?
Thanks Again
Rob

It's pretty straight forward, quick and easy.
