Jeep smells like gas on startup..

I noticed alil while back My Jeep would smell like gas on startup. I thought it was other cars around me. Recently Ive noticed that it smells like gas more often when I start up the engine, the smell is inside the Jeep, although it might be outside since I do keep the windows open. What do you guys think it is? Should I have a mechanic check it out quickly, I would at a drop of a dime but money is kinda tight right now. Thanx in advance. Oh and I forgot to mention that my mpg's suck it's currently 8.7 in the city. I feel as if everytime I get this smell of gas I blow a gallon right there.

8.7 in the city for a 4.7 is not the norm at all. the first thing i would look for is a leak, which would probably be obvious gas coming out from under. if a leak is present, it may only leak upon startup because thats when your fuel pump kicks on and pressurizes your lines, pushing fuel out of tiny cracks that would not leak when the lines are not pressurized. start it up and follow your lines from the tank on toward the engine bay.

X2 I can get around 10mpg in the city and that's flogging it. Do you have any gas on the ground where you park? This would show a probable leak location. Have you hit anything or run over anybody, just kidding. Check your lines both under and in the engine compartment.

Yeah 8.7 is what the Evic says, eversince I bought it with about 67000 k it's been reading that and I drive within the speed limit hardly any highways. Yeah these freaking potholes in New York city will wreck anything, out cud have been a pothole I hit alil while back. I haven't checked under the car for leaks, or I should say I do occassionally but not for any gas leaks. I'm assuming I would check after I turned the ignition on since that's the time that the gas smell comes up?
