Just picked up a new limited...now getting to a "level playing field"

Hey everyone...this is like my 4th or 5th post. I'm glad to be part of what seems like a good group of jeep enthusiasts. I just traded in my 2006 Laredo w/95k miles for a 2006 Limited Hemi w/52k miles. I must say, the Hemi is awesome. I hated to see my Laredo go...it was a nice car that gave me 0 trouble. I picked up the Hemi to tow my boat. Overall, I'm impressed with the power.

So my plan is to get to a "level playing field." I'm not 100% sure what maintenance has/has not been done up to this point, so here's my plan. Can you all add/subtract what you think may be good to take care of from a general maintenance perspective?!

1) Change Spark Plugs - just finished tonight...all 16. Not easy but not too hard. Replaced with OEM Champion 570s @ .045 in. Torqued to 13lbs. Test drove...seemed to be a bit snappier off the line. Will see if gas mileage goes up at all.

2) Drain and fill front/rear dif

3) Drain and fill transmission

4) Drain and fill transfer case

5) Flush coolant system - is this necessary at 52k miles?!? The coolant looks very clear/brand new.

6) Drain and replace power steering reservoir (small leak)

Now...for the future mods:

1) 2" Spacer Lift

2) Bigger Tires

3) Exhaust - any suggestions??

4) Rock Rails

5) CAI - are they worth it?

I hope to hear from some of you soon!

Cheers!

Sounds awesome! I'd go magnaflow cat back with either a bwoody or afe stage 2 cai. they're worth it if you also get a tuner. Good luck and welcome!

Just did the rear diff today. Was very easy. Pulled the cover off and did it the right way. First time I've ever seen the inside of a diff with elec limited slip.

Anyone know if you can get transfer case oil from advance auto or equivalent?

If you dump the tranny fluid, change the filter as well

Good idea. Is the filter easy to get to? Anyone know of a pic or writeup?

I haven't changed the trans oil in the WK yet but the filter will be inside the pan, held in with a couple of screws

Unlikely your milage will change hopefullly with your chrysler experience this wont hurt your feelings too bad ha ha.

Yes, yes, yes, VERY important, every 15k miles!

Quote:
3) Drain and fill transmission
Replace both filters, there is a spin on filter and a sump filter, the sump filter uses a T20 torx bit to hold the filter on, mopar filters come with a new seal to install in the trans, I feel if it comes with a new seal its probably a good one to replace . As mentioned just use ATF rtv to reseal this pan. This is a 120k service according to chrysler, but good to get into the pan and see what your dealing with on your new rig (look for debris and excessive metal)

Quote:
4) Drain and fill transfer case
According to the chrysler maintainence schedule this is a 100k service, but replacing the fluid too often never hurt anything.

The red coolant is 5 yr 100k mile coolant. For nothing other than age I would suggest a drain and fill, ultimately you could probably not do it and never have problems, but what fun is that???

6) Drain and replace power steering reservoir (small leak)
Just make sure its actually leaking from the resivor, also one thing I really like to do any time I drain out a P/S resivor, is when I fill it I like to turn the wheel lock to lock over and over, start the car for a moment, then shut if off and run the wheel back and fourth from lock to lock again, this is all done to purge air out of the system to prevent running a bunch of air into the poor pump, idealy you want the front wheels off the ground to make turning very easy.

Yes, yes and more yes

Re: Just picked up a new limited...now getting to a "level playing field"

Well, when changing the spark plugs I noticed oil on the threads of two plugs. They came from the cylinder closest to the passenger seat. I suspect either a leaky valve cover gasket or spark plug tube gasket. Called dealer, they are going to call me back. Should be covered under used card power train warranty.

Service 4WD System message has now appeared on the EVIC three times since last week. Dealer should also be looking at this under power train warranty.

Will keep everyone posted.

I do what I can to keep her runnin. Furthermore, I see the ill effects of poor maintainence, when I see 2500-10k dollar tickets I feel horrible and many times it was due to saving 40 bucks, 2-6 times a year by skipping oil changes, and not paying 450 bucks to replace the failing waterpump. Differentials at 1200-1600 dollars to be overhauled and when I pop the cover there still the red rtv the factory uses on the cover that looks like its never been off at 130k miles... yes some lube and tune places just suck it out and put more in (I cannot believe people pay for that)... The cover is dumping fluid from the 10 yr old seal failing but there is fresh tamper paint on the fill plug, wow.

The oil on the plugs is likely the valve cover gasket as you suggested.

the service 4wd lamp I believe has an update for the final drive control module that will fix the lamp, BUT it could be anything, the lamp is not there just for software failure
