K&N Cold Air Intake

Hey guys I need your opinion on the K&N Cold Air Intake for an 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. So I bought the Jeep in November 09 with 69,000 miles on it and now have about 80,000 miles on it so I drive a decent amount. I get about 17 mpg highway (prob cause i go 80mph+) and about 15 mpg or less city driving. I realize I can improve that by driving slower and gentler but we all know thats probably not going to happen. So that being said, I read that the K&N Cold Air Intake helps a little on MPG (1-2+) and horsepower. I have a drop in K&N filter right now and that works pretty well. Do you guys think its worth the $300 it costs for what the full cold air intake gives you? I was hoping some of the guys that installed one could give me their input. Any other guys that have different brands let me know why yours is better

Also, I plan on keeping this Jeep till it dies so what will it do to the life of the engine or any other components? My old 2001 Grand Cherokee has 260,000 miles on it and is still running like a champ. I'm trying to make this one last as long too so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys

Re: K&N Cold Air Intake

what engine do you have ? I am assuming the 4.7 ? is so then bwoody is currently trying to produce a true CAI for those engines and there are only short rams available for the 4.7 ... gotta wait for the true CAI

some other things that you might wanna do to open the beast up and make it breath etc etc etc

is tune, ported and polished tb, exhaust and also keep fluids changed regularly ... also tires

but if you are looking for a cheap K&N intake search username BPOD and his thread on buying a K&N CAI for $183 which I did too

other than that search around here for more info but that's off the top of my head for now

Re: K&N Cold Air Intake

Ya I do have the 4.7 L engine. Does it actually give you anything more than just a cool sounding jeep?

Re: K&N Cold Air Intake

CAIs do not help with MPGs at all.

Re: K&N Cold Air Intake

A little more responsive and louder intake noise but no real MPG gain

Re: K&N Cold Air Intake

I'm in the same situation as you hobbes, I'm looking for a CAI and I'm thinking I'm gonna wait for Bwoody to come out with a true CAI instead of spending almost the same amount on a short ram. The AFE one does look nice tho.

Edit: Just got an email from Mike @ Bwoody and all he had to say is that they were still in development. = (

Re: K&N Cold Air Intake

The only time it will make a difference (and then very slightly) will be at full throttle. Cruising down the highway, with very little airflow requirement, will not help at all. It will, however, make a big difference in noise level, which will probably make you hammer it more, thereby causing a loss in mileage. I love that sound. You'd do better by putting an efficient cat. back exhaust on it. Cost should be very similar. I just paid $320 for a custom Magnaflow/dual resonator cat. back on mine.

Re: K&N Cold Air Intake

Well they advertise gains... if it didn't have any gains... that would be false advertising, which is illegal* see below.

Any gains you will have will unlikely be noticed by you without hooking it up to a dyno or computer to measure any changes.

Couple with exhaust, programmer, and ported throttle body... you'll feel it and see it. Having a heavy foot won't help you any... removing restriction and adding power can be a blessing and a curse. lol

http://www.knfilters.com/dynocharts/57-1548_dyno.pdf

*Dyno chart shows gains at 3k... which isn't exactly normal....BUT... you still have 3k more till redline :P
