Keys/remote start questions

I have an 05 wk limited that I bought used. The jeep came with two keys, one of which stopped working last week. I replaced the battery, and that did not solve the problem. The key will still start the car, but it won't open the doors, I thought if the key was dead, then it wouldn't start the car, is that the case?

The second thing is that I found out while both keys will turn in the ignition, neither key when put in the door lock will turn. In essence the only way to unlock the doors is electronically with the key, is this normal?

Third, can you add an after market remote start to the vehicle? If a new key is going to cost me a couple hundred dollars, It may make sense to just get a remote start and bypass the keys all together.

Thanks for the help.

The security "chip" in the key does not require the FOB battery to be working to allow you to start the car. Nor does it require the radio transmitter that works the remote lock/unlock and alarm.

You should be able to open the door with the keys for the ignition.

Yes, you can add a remote start. If you search the forum, there are plenty of people discussing the types that they have found that work well.

So assuming that the keys would open the doors by turning in the lock, in reality I can live without the transmitter working, and just the key as a normal key?

Since neither key turns in the lock, do I need to take this to a dealer?

Thanks

Re: Keys/remote start questions

Maybe a locksmith could help. It might be that the prior owner had the ignition switch changed. If the fobs were working at the time they may not have given the keys for the door a second thought. I can't remember the last time I used a key in a car door.

Re: Keys/remote start questions

Before taking it anywhere, I would try shooting some lubricant into the lock.

As mentioned above, people hardly ever use the physical door lock, it's possible it is just a little stiff from non-use.

That was it, sprayed some wd-40 on the key, put it in the lock, and problem solved, funny thing is I just had to do this to our front door as my wife's key kept getting stuck, didn't even think about it for the car.

Thanks

Re: Keys/remote start questions

Glad to hear it was such a simple fix.

Now you can go back to trying to figure out why the remote doesn't work

The first thing I would check is the solder points and make sure the tabs that hold the battery in are nice and tight. If you search the forum, you should be able to find some pictures of this fix.
