Re: Little Mod for the Stock Air Box

Idk but with all the "covers" on and such water shouldnt get in, right? Its kind of like people are saying after they remove the flap behind the grill, they find bugs and such at the bottom of the air box. So cover on = no bugs, cover off = bugs. So in my mind wouldnt cover on = no water, cover off = maybe water?

Re: Little Mod for the Stock Air Box

I had that cover off almost from the time I got this jeep and never found water i it. Now I have a K&N intake and its never been wet with no airbox at all. I can see it getting wet if you wen through really deep water or puddles....

Re: Little Mod for the Stock Air Box

Just switched to K&N from airaid on my 3.7L. Better fitment and completely removes stock box unlike the k&n. Not sure if I notice any power difference between the two, but the airaid kept hitting the underside of the tower brace. The airaid is slightly louder since you lose the baffle above the engine and the k&n keeps it. The airaid would be a great system if the fitment at the throttle body was improved. The k&n takes way too long to assemble with all its l brackets and such.

Our Australian versions don't even have that airbox thing, just the scoop.

Here what I did.

Piece of plastic screening doubled over then jam it in...

There ya go. Actually think I got better mpg on cruise home tonight. Computer went from 17.5 to 18.5, same route and speed.

Re: Little Mod for the Stock Air Box

I took off the shield and the "hole cover" that Scott talked about. Haven't driven it more than a few blocks yet so we'll see if there's any changes.

Great mod. I am not sure why they installed the front piece at the factory.

yeah, I have a dashhawk and with my setup I monitored ambient air temp and intake air temp. You have to move the hose as close to the grille as possible if you want to reduce intake air temp because otherwise the hot air "bounces" off the radiator and enters the intake. but of course, the closer to the grille you get, the more bugs and moisture you may see on your filter.

Re: Little Mod for the Stock Air Box

For those worried about sucking water in....Turbo guys often inject water or Alcohol/Methanol in their intakes to cool the high air temp caused by the turbo. I doubt the amount of water you see from rain actually making it into the air box and through the filter will cause a problem.

I wouldnt go this route if you go offroading though.
