x2. I got a 265/70R17 in the spare location and noticed a lot of clunking in the back. Took a look at the spare and it was hanging low and loose. Cranked it up, clunking eliminated.
Rear sway links or bushes? Check those after the spare.... you'll really need to get it on a four-post hoist and get three or four guys to bounce it up and down.
i second rear links and bushings. i changed mine out when i had 5,000mi...they were shot. i put on bilstein's all around @ 10,000mi...guess what, the right rear stock shock was toast(have pics to prove it). the kicker is...i haven't taken the jeep off road yet.
I don't know if you're hearing the sound from inside the vehicle or from the outside, but I had this problem with my vehicle and it was an interior loud clunk. It ended up being the latch for the rear hatch was loose and needed tightening. Hope this is what you're experiencing because it's an easy and quick fix.
One of my friends said it sounded like it was comming from a door. I kind of agree. I was trying to pay more attention to it today and thats what it seems like. I hope!
I originally thought it was my driver's side rear door but once I made my buddy drive and I got in the back to try and pinpoint it, it quickly began sounding like the rear hatch/door.
I have the same clunk on my '07. Very noticeable when backing out of my driveway at an angle and onto the street. It does sound like it may be coming from the inside. I'll check the latch on the hatch door.
I just discovered a new one last night. It's inside of the cabin again and it's location is by the rear column on the driver's side. I tried pulling apart the paneling and looking in there but I couldn't see much by just bending it back. I'm probably going to have to take the rear seat out to figure it out.
