Loud grinding

My GC has 158k plus miles on it. She is starting to die on me. Every time I make a turn I get the loud grinding noise. People outside can even hear it. The sharper the turn the louder it gets.

Another problem I have is a loud knocking/grinding sound when I accelerate. At idle it's noticeable as well. This is probably the loudest car I even driven in. I can't even listen to music while driving.

I changed the oil, sparks plugs, differential gear oils. I'm thinking about changing the belt as well. I changed the spark pugs because I thought some weren't firing causing the knocking.

Anything else I could do? I'm guessing the noises are bearing or gears going out. I don't know much when it comes to cars.

Re: Loud grinding

The loud grinding noise when making a turn can be a CV joint from one of the axles.
Also if you have locking differentials, it could be a too low quantity of the limited slip additive.
The other knocking/grinding sound is coming from the engine? You mentioned you could hear it when idling. Have a look at the bearings from the accessory belt idler and tensioner pulleys. Those bearings get dry over time and start making noises. In worst case the bearing can even lock and the pulley will be destoyed, loosing the belt and all accessories. The worst one is the waterpump, because it can cause overheating when the engine is not shut down soon.

Re: Loud grinding

The noises that I could hear while idling is coming from the front of the engine. So it's probably what you describe. I suspected the fan or somewhere in that area.

Re: Loud grinding

I changed the transfer case fluid. That case was way over serviced. When I popped the top cap off it flowed out, probably half a quart.

Still didn't fix the problem. The cv joints looked good.
